Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in Engineering Section of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), Damascus. The Generator Technician reports to the to the Chief Engineering Section.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Generator Technician will perform the following duties: •Supervise and coordinate the installation, servicing, maintenance and repair, in compliance with recognized standards and regulations pertaining to safety and installation of codes, generators set and mechanical installations. •Be familiar with operating procedures, standards and codes of the facilities/equipment, with respect to location requirements. •Supervise, Inspect and appraise the work carried out by international and local staff and contractors. •Supervise Junior technicians, tradesmen and artisans assigned to the team, and local and international junior staff assigned by determining workloads and schedules. •Inspect and report on Generator & associated project and maintenance works carried out either by contractors or tradesmen and staff under supervision and ensure proper utilization of available resources. •Follow-up on correction of defects in materials or workmanship of contractor’s work during the warranty period of the contracts. •Diagnose technical faults and carry-out remedy for malfunctioning or defective generating sets. •Assess requirements for the installation, repair and maintenance for generating sets. •Review and approve work orders and assign tasks to tradesmen and technicians being supervised. •Guide the team to prepare the annual requirements of spare parts of various capacity of generators for their regular maintenance and overhauling activities through coordination with regional generator teams and provide the budgetary and manpower requirements to the unit chief and section chief. •Coordinate and carry out regular meetings with regional generator teams to get firsthand information on regular maintenance of generators, their performance status, spare parts and additional generator requirements and write off activities. •Visit regional camps to observe the generators and power related concerns and provide feedback to Unit chief and Section Chief. •Support in implementing projects such as synchronization of generators, centralization of power generation source, solar farm and power monitoring infrastructure projects as required. •Apply and ensure adherence to safety programs related to the safe operation of air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, generating sets or power tools and equipment of the building and maintenance trade. Identify resources requirements for his/her area of responsibility in connection with budget preparations. •Conducting in-house training to junior technicians, tradesmen and artisans on the imaging technical skills in the new construction methods, installation of specialized equipment, fault finding and remedy •Read and interpret specifications and technical drawings, schedules, manuals for projects, installations and upgrade repair of infrastructure related to power demand and generator requirement. •Resolve problems, Inspect quality of work and work performance. Administration: •Overseeing technical and administrative functions in the unit under supervision. Also provide technical support to the Regions as and when required. •Ensure compliance of all work-related activities in a fair, ethical and consistent manner. •Plan, schedule and prepare projects for the installation of generators sets. •Provide scheduling and supervision for installation and maintenance of new generators sets in conventional buildings, temporary buildings, sites and premises in the mission area. •Supervise the maintenance of records relating to inventories, work orders and general correspondence. •On the basis of the assessment for maintenance and installations for generators sets, draft technical or assessment reports, determine work requirements and issue work orders and work assignments to assistants and technicians. •Prepare periodic acquisition plans for engineering materials/equipment related to generators sets for the units under supervision. •Secure equipment, materials, supplies and spare parts for supervised work. •Assist in the preparation of cost estimates for infrastructure projects and maintenance programs. •Prepare bills of quantities and costing for infrastructure projects. •Assist in technically evaluating bids and proposals for construction projects involving generators sets. •Issue instructions at site, record variances, supervise and record measurements of work taken with respect to work progress and progress payments. •Verify completion of construction or maintenance stages of projects involving generator sets and recommends to the Chief of Unit/Section for progress or final payments. •Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the Section Chief.

Education High school or equivalent is required. Technical Diploma related to mechanical, or power related field is required. Recognized and valid license to repair/maintain/troubleshoot and install generators or power supply system is desirable. Related Technical training from a technical/engineering/trade/vocational school or through an accepted national apprenticeship programs or related engineering diploma/ degree is desirable.

Work Experience At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in installing, servicing, maintaining, and repairing generating sets is required.

Field experience in a complex environment is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
