Preamble: The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development, and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers. In most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long-established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UNVs take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities. In all assignments, UNVs promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UNVs even more rewarding and productive.

The United Nations for the Referendum in Western Sahara has its headquarters in Laayoune, Western Sahara with 9 Team sites in the mission area. The Electrical unit is within the Engineering department of MINURSO responsible for all aspects of Electrical installation and maintenance. The UNV assignment will require frequent interaction with Military G4 Engineers, Movement and Control (Aviation), Communication and Telecommunications and Transport Section and with local technicians.

Under the supervision of Power Generation Unit Supervisor and the overall direction of the Chief Engineering Section the incumbent shall be responsible for the following tasks:

• Install and coordinate new generators, including allied works. • Maintain existing systems. • Ensure that the generator installations/works meet the safety standards in accordance with international codes and regulations. • Install large capacity generators to form complete power generating stations, including identifying sites and advising on platforms and generator houses in various locations of the mission area. • Carry out scheduled routine maintenance, emergency repairs and overhauling of generators (static/mobile), including the installation of auxiliary fuel systems, such as main tanks and transfer pumps. • Analyse and correct distortions on loads. Balance the loading on all three phases of three-phase generators. Trouble-shoot causes of the load imbalance and provide solution; • Check correct requirement of electrical loads for proper sizing of generators; • Prepare material specifications for the purpose of raising requisitions; Provide lists of spare parts for diesel engines, alternators, and control panels as well as necessary tools and equipment • Ensure the use of the spare parts in most productive manner; • Liaise with Power Generation Unit supervisor for expert advice on generator works and the Maintenance Unit supervisor for electrical matters. • Provide instructions on end-use care and servicing of generator sets; • Maintain log books, maintenance records and spare parts’ consumption records; • Perform other functions as assigned by the Power Generation Unit supervisor.

• Professionalism: Thorough knowledge of electrical installations. Commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of peace operations; • Communication: Good written and oral skills, including ability to prepare and present concise oral and written engineering reports, briefings, updates and other documentation; • Planning and organizational skills: Ability to establish priorities arid to plan, coordinate and monitor work plans; • Technological Awareness: Good technical skills, the incumbent is aware of the latest technology in the field of diesel generators and safety regulations related to the installation, repairing and maintenance. Demonstrates initiative and willingness to learn new skills. •Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships with military and civilian counterparts in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;

• At least four (4) years practical experience in installation, repair and servicing of generators/ power • generating and diesel engines systems in a private, commercial, or military environment. • Previous experience with the UN/other peace keeping missions will be an added advantage. • Experience in installation and maintenance of PV-Diesel generator hybrid system is an asset. • The incumbent must be a dynamic, multi-functional person, who supports MINURSO with professionalism, dedication and client orientation. • Education: Completion of High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational training in a related field from a Technical school, with appropriate apprenticeship Diploma • Good knowledge in computer application; writing and sending emails, preparing techncial reports using Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel) and drafting sketches.

• Accommodation and food in the duty station (Laayoune) is not provided. • Accommodation and food in the teamsites and Tindouf is provided.
