This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the overall supervision of the Deputy Representative (DRR) and the direct supervision of the Assistant of the Resident Representative (ARR) or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the International UN Volunteer Gender Specialist will:

  • Assist women's groups benefiting from the women's empowerment project in all their activities
  • Compile, analyze and interpret gender issues and related statistical data, conduct in-depth research and prepare high-quality analysis and reports
  • Provide high-quality analysis and make substantive contributions to the project and other strategic documents
  • Make relevant contributions to knowledge networks and professional circles by identifying best practices and lessons learned
  • Contribute to the assessment of the country’s gender policies and their impact on poverty reduction, growth, equity, etc.
  • Strengthen the capacities of the national counterpart, the Country Office, program and project executing agents including other national partners from civil society and the private sector on the integration of gender in programming and their implementation
  • Support for the design, programming, and monitoring and evaluation of the project and other related programs
  • Produce notes, write documents on gender mainstreaming as part of annual planning; review work plans and project progress reports, participate in project monitoring, missions and evaluation meetings
  • Attend meetings, workshops or others related activities to gender equality
  • Maintain a permanent dialogue and continuous networking on gender equality with the partners concerned, such as the government, technical and financial partners, the private sector and civil society
  • Initiate and supervise any process to improve performance on gender issues at the level of the national counterpart and UNDP.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant area, e.g. International Relations, Human Rights Law, Social Science, Gender and Development, Sociology, Law or related field

Required experience:

60 Months

Experience remark:

  • At least 5 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in Gender Policy Development is required. Experience working in the UN or other international development organization is an asset

Language skills:

  • French(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • English(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

  • Sound knowledge in gender issues
  • Demonstrated experience in gender analysis and advocacy, impact assessment on the promotion of gender equality
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines
  • Have affinity with or interest in Gender Equality, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
