UNDP SYR-CO prioritize gender equality, equity and inclusion including promoting global feminist principles in development work. UNDP SYR CO has been part of Gender Equality Seal 2021-2023 process. The gender seal is a corporate certification process that not only recognizes good performance of UNDP Country Offices in delivering transformational gender equality results, but as well serves as a learning platform to help Country Offices especially those in crisis such as Syrian context to establish baselines, fine-tune strategies, address gender gaps, showcase interventions for gender equality and document related innovations. Unlike the usual “gender audit” or “gender evaluation”, the Seal process creates an inclusive and open space for free thinking and stimulates out-of-the-box thinking. UNDP Syria CO under lead of country representative and coordination of gender analyst and champion team completed the self-assessment phase, developed an action plan and working jointly to meeting benchmarking exercise towards golden certification; as Country Offices are certified based on a review of their gender equality accomplishments against clear benchmarks indicators.

As part of Social Cohesion Local Development – Gender Equality & Women’s Empowerment, the Gender Justice Programme Support Intern will be supporting implementation of gender seal action plan and gender mainstreaming work including internal and external campaigns and supporting gender equality principles in everything we do.

The Gender Justice Programme Support Intern will work under the overall supervision of Gender Analyst and in close collaboration with the gender champions and UNDP SYR-CO teams to performing a variety of standard clerical/administrative processes, exchange information, ensure high quality and accuracy of work, and consistent monitoring / regular update for gender action plan. The Intern promotes a client, quality, and results-oriented approach.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support Gender Analyst and Champion team in follow up on implementation of gender Seal action plan – 7 key areas to facilitate gender mainstreaming structured interventions.
  • Support in collecting data and update gender seal action plan monitoring tools.
  • Assist in drafting communication material for gender equality support. Establishes and manages an effective e-archiving system using corporate systems (MS SharePoint, Teams).
  • Follows up on deadlines, commitments made, actions taken, and coordination of collection and submission of the reports as needed.

  • Supports administrative and logistical services including conferences, workshops, retreats.

  • Contribute to reports regarding gender and inclusion analysis.
  • Assist in gender related trainings.
  • Provide support to gender equality advocacy work
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Applicant should meet one of the following requirements:

  • Enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher).
  • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.

Experience:

  • Good experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and advance knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages; is highly desirable.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations in gender responsive programmes and women empowerment and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter, is desirable.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views, is desirable.
  • Gender equality & human rights advocate.

Language Requirements:

  • High Proficiency in Arabic & English. - ability to write clearly and concisely
