1. Background:

UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia (ROSA) requires an intern to provide assistance to Regional Gender Adviser to strengthen the Gender area of work across the region and country offices, specifically on cross-cutting gender issues. This will support CO to accelerate important gender initiatives, in the nexus with COVID19 response, by generating gender knowledge products with the country offices, promote gender responsive programming, promote a regional learning practitioner series on achieving gender results, accelerate evidence, and enhance gender programming in the South Asia region.

UNICEF has defined five COVID19 gender priority actions which are linked to SitRe, SitAn and SES data collection. With the revision of the CCCs, an additional set of gender indicators have been published. In some countries, UNICEF has produced UReport and/or rapid assessment surveys that are producing valuable data on the situation of children, women, families and communities.

2. Objective of Internship:

The overall purpose of this internship is to find a bright, motivated intern for a 6-month period to produce a monthly gender analysis related to the programmatic activities on Emergency, Gender and Monitoring & Evaluation, across the regional headline results and COVID19 Result Areas.

3. Expected results (measurable results):

Under the supervision of the Regional Gender Adviser accomplish workplan related activities for ROSA Gender Section:

  1. Communications support: Contribute data and analysis to the newsletter, and support IDG2020 and 16 days of Activism Initiatives.
  2. Planning/Monitoring: Support implementation of GEM coding and review of HAC and HRP data for gender codes

4. How can you make a difference?

  1. Key tasks and responsibilities

Working directly under the supervision of the Regional Gender Adviser, the intern will be responsible for the following general/specific tasks:

  • Logistical support
    • Participate and take minutes during relevant meetings related to education and gender.
    • Support the knowledge management consultant in keeping track of and consolidating / sharing relevant COVID-19 guidance materials in the areas of gender equality-in-education and GBV, gender and assessment.
    • Review and consolidate country-level COVID-19 initiatives in plans and strategy notes in these three areas.
    • Coordinate with the regional Gender Advisor in developing gender-specific risk communication in education and in strengthening the gender-responsiveness in country office response plans.
  • Background research

  • Identify, share and summarize existing research and guidance on school related GBV in Afghanistan and India (UP)

  • Conduct background research on innovative approaches to addressing gender inequality, girls’ limited opportunities for learning and access to technology, GBV, and online/mobile assessment modalities in the context of school closures.

  • Coordination

  • Support coordination with relevant focal points in country offices and regional office pertaining to gender-related work and events.

  • Help coordinate with key stakeholders and partners for the South Asia Youth Steering Commitee.

  • Specific Tasks per Functional Area - Gender:

    • Communications support:
    • Contribute data and analysis to the newsletter, and support IDG2020 and 16 days of Activism Initiatives.
    • Planning:
    • Support development of an Adolescent Girl Framework
    • Support implementation of GEM coding and review of HAC and HRP data for gender codes.
  1. Monitoring & Evaluation:
  • Support the review and analysis of data and evidence
  • Gather and prepare documentation, presentation, technical materials and other resources
  • Support preparation of summary analysis of ROSA year end reports
  • Support other evidence generation and data analytical work and reporting
  • Support preparation of summaries and synthesis of evidence generation reports and other relevant documents
  1. Emergency:
  • Provide input on data/statistics for the country office annual reports, and other relevant programme documents with the aim of extracting elements relevant to HAC preparation, emergency preparedness, disaster risk reduction and climate change issues.

5. Insurance:

  • UNICEF accepts no responsibility for costs or fatality arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship; therefore, the intern must have adequate medical insurance.
  • Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical and life/accident insurance for the duty station for which they will work.

6. Learning opportunities for the Intern:

  • General understanding of the work and mission of the UNICEF programme in South Asia
  • Insight and hands-on experience on UNICEF related to communication and advocacy programme
  • Become more familiar with working in a United Nations / international organization and in a multicultural environment

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have

  1. Required Education, Skills and Experiences:
  • Recently completed (within the last two years) or currently pursuing a University Degree in development studies, public administration, gender studies, political science, international law, human rights law or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in producing data graphs and analysis, using excel and other statistical packages.
  • Strong interest in Human Rights, especially Child Rights, Women’s Rights and Gender Studies and Disaster Management,
  • Knowledge and understanding of human rights mechanisms and of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and CEDAW,
  • Prior experience in the work environment of an international agency, NGOs, UN, or international institutions would be desirable,
  • Excellent computer literacy (Microsoft Office products),

7. Intern Status in UNICEF:

  • Interns are considered gratis personnel and as such they are not staff members.
  • Although not considered a staff member of UNICEF, the intern shall be subject to the authority of the Executive Director and the authority delegated by her to Director and Heads of Offices. Interns are not entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded by member states to UNICEF's officials and staff members.
  • Interns may not be sought or accepted as substitutes for staff to be recruited against authorized posts.
  • Interns may not represent UNICEF in any official capacity.
  • An accrual of 2.5 days per month to be used as annual leave, emergency leave, or uncertified sick leave.

8. Other relevant information:

  • The intern will work full-time remotely. The candidate selected will be governed by and subject to UNICEF’s General Terms and Conditions for interns.
  • As an intern, you will respect the confidentiality of information that you collect or are exposed to at UNICEF. No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNICEF without the explicit written authorization by the Head of Office or Division Director.
  • The UNICEF internship programme is not connected with employment and there is no expectancy of such. Interns cannot apply for posts advertised internally to UNICEF staff during the period of internship.
