This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women will work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States' priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. UN Women works in four thematic areas i.e., Women Peace and Security (WPS), Ending Violence Against Women, Women Economic Empowerment, and Governance and Participation. In governance and women’s political participation, UN Women focusses on supporting national and subnational efforts to increase women’s participation in decision making and leadership as well as in elected offices. To address the under-representation of women’s engagement in elections and in political leadership in Afghanistan and to strengthen the voice of women leaders in governance issues, the ACO works closely with the Government of Afghanistan, as well as with UN, civil society, and development partners to promote women’s participation in elections including as voters, candidates, and part of the election’s management teams. Further, UN Women in Afghanistan supports a cadre of women to develop capacity and ability to demonstrate leadership in political and institutional decision-making bodies and at the national and community level. Afghanistan Country office also continues to play a key role in supporting the Government on systematic institutionalization of Gender Responsive Budgeting as part of increased accountability on impact of national/provincial budgets and plans on women and girls.

Gender Equality Coordination Support Analyst is recruited under Women Peace and Security thematic area. UN Women is catalysing the UN system and supporting Afghanistan to deliver on the women, peace and security agenda and enhanced capacities and opportunities for gender equality advocates to participate in peace processes at all levels. Under the overall guidance from the Country Representative and Deputy Representative, the Gender Coordination Support Assistant will report directly to the Gender Equality Coordinator seconded to UN Resident Coordinator Office and will primarily support engagement with UN Gender Focal Points and civil society.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Gender Equality Coordinator (GEC) or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Gender Equality Coordination Support Analyst will:

• Support GEC in day-to-day coordination work with various stakeholders (Gender Theme Group, various UN inter-agency teams and working groups, civil society); • Provide technical inputs and analysis to various gender related strategic and policy documents, joint programmes, communication materials. • Support GEC with draft inputs to relevant background documents, briefs, donor and other presentations or communication materials related to promotion of gender equality coordination, • Prepare draft ToRs, liaise with various consultants engaged under the project to ensure delivery of tasks and processing payments as per agreed schedules. • Undertake relevant environment scanning in relation to gender related issues in the country and provided timely update to management. • Perform events management tasks like drafting agenda, meeting minutes, assisting with logistics, etc., as needed • Ensure up to date file management through circulating and managing relevant files in the RCO and UN Women libraries. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

gender related programming. • Good writing and editing skills in English, Dari and Pashto required, especially briefs, agendas, minutes, project-management related documents. • Experience coordinating and liaising with external stakeholders is an asset. • Familiarity with international development and gender equality an asset.

Other desired/mandatory required technical knowledge • Overall good understanding of Afghanistan political landscape. • Direct experience providing technical advice to national entities officials is required. • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and advance knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages, experience in handling of web-based management systems. • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills. • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. UN Women will not provide accommodation.

Entitlements:
