The total population is estimated at 6.1 million, with two thirds living in rural areas and young people under 30 years constituting 30 per cent of the population. Despite significant progress in reducing extreme poverty (SDG 1.1), one quarter of the population lives below the national poverty line (SDG1.2). Pollution in winter remains a serious problem in Bishkek. English is not widely spoken, with Kyrgyz and Russian being the common languages.
