Overview

You have:

  • Bachelor's degree in climate change, social sciences, gender studies, economics, engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in climate action initiatives and youth engagement activities.
  • Strong understanding of gender equity issues, especially in relation to climate governance.
  • Ability to organize workshops and facilitate dialogues among stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership skills in mobilizing youth for community actions.

Contract

This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

The Gender and Youth Liaison Officer for Climate Action will serve as the primary bridge between the national youth of Sao Tome and Principe, UNDP, and DGACC, ensuring effective communication, collaboration, and representation in matters of climate action. This role is pivotal in amplifying youth voices, fostering gender equity, and ensuring inclusivity in climate and environmental actions at both policy and grassroots levels.

Under the direct supervision of UNDP technical advisor & the Director of the General Directorate of Environment and Climate Action (DGAAC) at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Natural Resources and the Environment, and in collaboration with the Directorate of Planning at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and the Blue Economy, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Liaison and Representation: Act as the main point of contact between national youth, UNDP, and DGACC, ensuring that youth perspectives and concerns are effectively communicated and addressed in climate action discussions and decisions. Facilitate regular meetings, workshops, and dialogues between the stakeholders to foster collaboration and mutual understanding.

Youth Engagement and Awareness: Lead initiatives to engage the youth in climate and environmental actions, ensuring their active participation in decision-making processes.

Organize and oversee awareness campaigns to enhance youth understanding of climate change, its impacts, and potential solutions.

Gender Equity and Inclusivity: Champion gender equity in all climate and environmental actions, ensuring that women, youth, and LGBTIQA+ groups are adequately represented, and their voices heard. Collaborate with the Institute of Gender and other relevant bodies to design and implement strategies that promote gender equity in climate governance mechanisms, the NDC, and broader climate actions in the country.

Capacity Building: Coordinate and provide training sessions for national stakeholders, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Institute of Gender, to enhance their understanding and capacity to address climate change challenges. Ensure that marginalized and vulnerable groups, including women, youth, and LGBTIQA+ communities, are equipped with the knowledge and skills to actively participate in the climate decision-making process.

Youth-led Volunteering Efforts: Spearhead and support youth-led volunteering initiatives aimed at addressing climate change and promoting environmental conservation at the community level. Inclusive Governance: Advocate for and support the active engagement of women, youth, and LGBTIQA+ groups in the climate decision process, climate governance mechanisms, and in the design and implementation of the NDC and other climate actions in the country.

Officially the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, is a Portuguese-speaking island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. It consists of two archipelagos around the two main islands: São Tomé and Príncipe, located about 140 kilometres (87 miles) apart and about 250 and 225 kilometres (155 and 140 miles), respectively, off the north-western coast of Gabon. At sea level, the climate is tropical—hot and humid with average yearly temperatures of about 27 °C (80.6 °F) and little daily variation. The temperature rarely rises beyond 32 °C (89.6 °F). At the interior's higher elevations, the average yearly temperature is 20 °C (68 °F), and nights are generally cool. Annual rainfall varies from 5,000 mm (196.9 in) on the southwestern slopes to 1,000 mm (39.4 in) in the northern lowlands. The rainy season is from October to May.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. This position is based in Sao Tome.

National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adjust to the prevailing culture and traditions. Conditions of Service for national UN Volunteers The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment. The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents - except for UN Community Volunteers), as well as final repatriation (if applicable). Furthermore, in non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, a Well-Being Differential (WBD) will be provided monthly.
