This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

The UNV will support implementation of UNFPA Zimbabwe’s new country programme particularly under Outcome 3 on “Gender equality and women’s empowerment” which seeks to improve knowledge of women and girls on life skills, gender equitable norms, attitudes and behaviours including sexuality and reproduction, self-confidence and self-esteem, and capacity to adequately access GBV services. The UNV is also expected to contribute to the success of Outcome 1-Output 2 which focuses on “adolescents and young people, including vulnerable groups, are equipped with knowledge and skills to participate in decision-making and make informed decisions on SRHR.” In this context, the UNV will support the implementation of innovative and sustainable interventions that will contribute to building resilience to shocks for women and girls in Zimbabwe, He/she will participate in and contribute towards the integration of programme interventions both at national and community levels

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Representative, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Support general programme implementation, monitoring and reporting -Assists in planning, monitoring, reporting, review and evaluation of programme interventions. -Participates in field missions, programme reviews and prepares reports to inform programming. -Represents the organisation in UN wide and sector meetings and platforms.

  2. Support the Empowerment of women and girls and the Engagement of Men and Boys (EMB), -Contributes to the design and implementation of appropriate and innovative economic empowerment initiatives for women and girls, ensuring effective partnerships , building on existing community systems and structures. -Assists with designing, implementation and monitoring of sustainable and effective Menstrual Health Management (MHM) programming -Assists in MHM coordination and knowledge sharing with relevant stakeholders and platforms. -Supports implementation of age appropriate disability inclusive Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) interventions in schools and the community. -Participates in analysis of existing men and boys’ engagement programmes/ activities -Assists in developing new models and ideas for men and boys’ engagement.

  3. Support programme integration, knowledge sharing, communications and visibility -Supports harmonized implementation of adolescents and youth, community, and gender and GBV interventions. -Contributes to communication and visibility work including through co-developing age-appropriate messages and success stories. -Supports national and community interventions on preventing teenage pregnancies and supporting girls to complete secondary education. -Assists in improving the integration of SRH and youth economic empowerment.

  4. Support innovation and resource mobilization efforts -Assists in identifying innovations/ new ways of working better to improve programme support and delivery. -Participates in scanning for resource mobilisation opportunities and contributes to developing concept notes and ideas.

-Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Zimbabwe is in Southern Africa and has three seasons, cool and dry from May-Aug, hot and dry from Sep-Nov, warm and wet from Dec-Apr. The capital Harare lies at an altitude of 1450m above sea level. The middle plateau is Malaria free and prophylaxis is highly recommended in low lying and hot areas. The currency in use is local Zimbabwean dollar and all basic food and accessories are available. There are public and private health facilities as well as many social amenities available in Harare.

Harare is a cosmopolitan town full of culture and history. It has over a million residents and a large UN agency presence. The Security Level in Harare is classified as Low (Level 2) as per the UN security management system in Zimbabwe. There are no major security challenges to UN operations in Harare. However, individuals must be on the alert as crime, mainly robberies, house break-ins and smash & grab thefts from motor vehicles at traffic lights and road accidents are some of the increasing risks to the UN in Zimbabwe.
