UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.

UNFPA Supports reproductive health care for women and youth in more than 150 countries – which are home to more than 80 per cent of the world’s population, the health of pregnant women, especially the 1 million who face life-threatening complications each month, reliable access to modern contraceptives sufficient to benefit 20 million women a year, training of thousands of health workers to help ensure at least 90 per cent of all childbirths are supervised by skilled attendants, prevention of gender-based violence, which affects 1 in 3 women, abandonment of female genital mutilation (FGM), which harms 3 million girls annually, prevention of teen pregnancies, complications of which are the leading cause of death for girls 15-19 years old, efforts to end child marriage, which could affect an estimated 70 million girls over the next 5 years, delivery of safe birth supplies, dignity kits and other life-saving materials to survivors of conflict and natural disaster and censuses, data collection and analyses, which are essential for development planning

In 2018, UNFPA launched efforts to achieve three transformative results, ambitions that promise to change the world for every man, woman and young person: Ending unmet need for family planning, ending preventable maternal deaths and ending gender based violence and harmful practices.

Under overall guidance and supervision of the UNFPA Representative and direct supervision of the Assistant Representative, the UNV Gender/GBV Specialist will support the strengthening of capacity of the Gender machinery to better coordinate Gender and GBV intervention. He/she will support the Ministry of Women Affairs and other actors in coordinating all FGM/Child Marriage and Gender activities including the work of the National Steering Committee on Gender. The successful candidate will:

Serve as the UNFPA Country Office technical lead on gender programming and support Provide technical support to the National Steering Committee on Gender and FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) Facilitate the review, formulation and enactment process of appropriate legislation on gender and FGM Serve as the technical lead of the UNFPA FGM Programme including the UNFPA/UNICEF Joint Programme on FGM Identify and develop strategic policy and programme intervention in addressing violence against women and girls. Periodically review the National Action Plan on Gender and FGM Monitor the implementation of Gender and FGM activities countrywide

Support gender mainstreaming in Country Office activities Provide reports on the implementation of Gender and FGM activities and other reports as programmatically required. Facilitate meetings of the committee on the Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Acts 2013 and other coordination platforms on Gender and FGM. Enhance sharing of information on results and identify enabling factors for the implementation of the Gender Communication Strategy. Development of guidelines for disbursement of funds to support victims of violence and their families Facilitate the update of the National plan of action on Gender 2012 – 2016, the National Plan of Action for the Elimination of FGM/C 2012 – 2016 and other relevant policies, plans and guidelines. Support resource mobilization activities for the gender programme, the implementation of the National Plan of Action on Gender Based Violence as well as the National Action Plan on Female Genital Mutilation/C. Serve as the technical lead of the UN Gender Working Group and coordinate its activities Facilitate evidence gathering and dissemination on gender. Develop, manage and enhance quality partnerships with national partners, donors and other relevant groups on gender Performs any other duties as assigned by the Representative

As an active UNFPA team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNFPA and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including the following tangible and measurable outputs: Functional National Gender coordination Mechanism is in place; A GBV response programme for the Country Office; Improved FGM programme,; UN joint programme on gender developed

The Gambia is situated at the tip of the West African coast and has a total surface are of approximately 10, 360 square kilometres. Apart from the 48km stretch of the Atlantic Ocean, The Gambia is landlocked by Senegal. The climate consists of a tropical hot rainy season from June to October and a cooler dry season from November to May. The Gambia has a total population of about 2 million. English is the official language. Mandinka and Wolof are the main local languages most widely used in the country. The Gambia is relatively peaceful, and the people are warm and friendly. Precautions should nevertheless be taken to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
