This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

The candidate will be supporting the implementation of UNSOM’s Integrated Gender Office to implement its mandate contained in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2657. The resolution encourages the Federal Government of Somalia to deepen cooperation and collaboration at all levels to Promote the full equal and meaningful participation of women at all levels of decision-making, including in the context of peace building, reconciliation processes and security sector reform.

The candidate’s tasks will involve working with other United Nations entities such as UNDP, UN Women, UNFPA and UNICEF in fulfilling this mandate. It will also involve working with national stakeholders including Members of Parliament, Federal Government officials, Federal Member State officials and the civil society.

Under the direct supervision of Integrated Gender Office & Senior Adviser on Women’s Protection the national UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Support mission implementation of UN Security Council Resolution on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), the Policy on DPKO/DFS Gender Equality in Peacekeeping Operations and the UN system-wide Gender Parity strategy. • Work closely with gender focal points and mission components in implementing policies and programmes promoting gender-sensitive approaches and combating gender-based violence. • Work closely with Strategic Communication and Public Information Group (SCPAG) to provide media-related support to the Integrated Gender Office to Somali audiences. • Draft, edit and provide substantive inputs to periodic reports, briefings and speeches on WPS issues. • Support the delivery of gender training for all levels of civilian and uniformed person-nel in the mission. • Conduct substantive research and analysis of gender issues, utilizing analytical monitoring and evaluation processes, including indicators and benchmarks, to ensure the measurement of progress in gender mainstreaming activities. • Collaborate with UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes, as with relevant institutions and NGOs, and regularly participates in inter-agency coordination forum. • Establish working relationships with all mission pillars and sections. • Support coordination the substantive work of the designated mission gender focal points. • Performs other duties as required.

in policy development, programme implementation related to gender equality and media relations is required. Prior experience with the UN is desirable.

General: Mogadishu is the HQ of UN operations in Somalia. The UN Volunteer will be subject to the overall direction and guidance of the UN Designated Official (DO) for security. The volunteer will be incorporated into all applicable security protocols and will be required to adhere to the guidelines, security plans and other directives issued by the DO. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the insurance plan.
