Overview

Deliver high-quality analytical and research inputs for the G7 Nature Compact Progress Review.

You have:

  • A university degree (master’s or equivalent) in environmental studies, international relations, economics, sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, or a closely related field is required.
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental research, data analysis, or programme coordination related to biodiversity, climate, or sustainable development is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in desk research, data compilation and literature review for analytical or policy-oriented projects is required.
  • Experience in preparing technical or synthesis reports for international, governmental, or intergovernmental processes (e.g., G7, G20, CBD, UNEA, OECD) is required.
  • Familiarity with multilateral environmental agreements and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is required.
  • Experience in organising and documenting multi-stakeholder consultations or expert meetings is desirable.
  • Experience working with the United Nations system or comparable international organisations is desirable.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of any other UN language is desirable.

Result of Service

The overall result of services will be the delivery of high-quality analytical, research and coordination inputs that contribute directly to the preparation of the G7 Nature Compact Progress Review (2021–2025). The work will ensure the production of well-structured evidence, clear documentation of consultations, and technically sound supporting materials that underpin an evidence-based and policy-relevant final report aligned with UNEP standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This consultancy assignment will support the work of the GEF Biodiversity and Land Degradation Unit in the Biodiversity and Land Branch, Ecosystems Division. The G7 Nature Compact - Research and Coordination Consultant will provide research, analytical, and coordination to UNEP and the Senior Consultant for the preparation of the G7 Nature Compact Progress Review (2021–2025). The consultant will contribute to data analysis, document synthesis, consultation coordination, and preparation of technical materials to ensure the timely and high-quality delivery of the review outputs. Specific duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Research and Evidence Review • Review and extraction of information from global, regional, and G7-related reports, datasets, and policy sources. • Compile data tables, evidence matrices, and bibliographic references in line with the analytical framework of the review. • Contribute to mapping collective progress and identifying illustrative examples across the four pillars of the G7 Nature Compact: transition, investment, conservation and restoration, and accountability. Analytical and Technical inputs • Preparation of analytical notes, annexes, and indicator summaries to inform the draft and final synthesis report. • Prepare concise visual summaries, graphs, and tables to highlight findings and trends. • Contribute to ensuring consistency and quality of data presentation and referencing across documents. Consultations and Coordination • Organization and documentation of expert consultations, technical meetings, and validation discussions. • Prepare agendas, background notes, and summary records of discussions. • Coordinate with UNEP divisions and partners to ensure timely exchange of information and alignment of inputs. Drafting and Quality Assurance • Contribute to drafting sections of annexes, background materials, and technical summaries. • Review and cross-check information for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to agreed methodologies. • Integration of comments and revisions from UNEP reviewers and partners into the draft and final reports. Knowledge Management and Communication • Maintain an organised database of references, data sources, and meeting records. • Preparation of presentation materials, talking points, and communication products to accompany the final report. • Ensure proper version control and documentation of deliverables for internal reference. The G7 Nature Compact - Research and Coordination Consultant will work under the supervision of the Deputy director of Ecosystems Division.

Qualifications/special skills

A university degree (master’s or equivalent) in environmental studies, international relations, economics, sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, or a closely related field is required. A first-level university degree, combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental research, data analysis, or programme coordination related to biodiversity, climate, or sustainable development is required. Demonstrated experience in desk research, data compilation and literature review for analytical or policy-oriented projects is required. Experience in preparing technical or synthesis reports for international, governmental, or intergovernmental processes (e.g., G7, G20, CBD, UNEA, OECD).
