The Global Philanthropy team sits within the Private Sector Fundraising & Partnerships (PSFP) section of the Private Fundraising and Partnerships (PFP) Division of UNICEF. Private Philanthropy is a fast-growing income stream for UNICEF’s private sector fundraising and partnership section.

UNICEF raises money from philanthropic donors both directly through the Global Philanthropy Team and indirectly through National Committees and fundraising country offices around the world. The Global Philanthropy team is responsible for providing both strategic leadership and technical support in this area.

UNICEF is refining its offer to the ultra-wealthy philanthropic audience. Through private grant-making, donors can ensure sustainable change for children (Impact), receive clear attribution on the change they’ve made possible (recognition), and meet a network of like-minded and powerful families (community). This is an emotional, life-defining journey enriched with purpose. Each of our global initiatives is built to realize the ultimate offer to write the story of your life – linking philanthropy to identity, individuality, and meaning.

Under the general guidance of the Chief of Global Philanthropy, UNICEF is seeking two Fundraising Managers (Global Philanthropy) who will play a key role in adapting and implementing this strategy – driving. To support these markets, one position will be based in Tokyo, Japan, and the second position within the EU time zone, the exact location to be confirmed.

How can you make a difference?

The incumbents will be essential leaders of a small team dedicated to supporting markets. Below is the current primary focus of the role that can be foreseen:

Market Advancement

  • Overseeing one-on-one coaching to select Major Gift Officers (MGOs) to ensure the engagement of prospects in their portfolio and/or support in developing their strategy.
  • Managing UNICEF’s engagement with prospects and donors at key events.
  • Providing support to local offices in hosting high-quality national engagement events for donors and ensuring appropriate involvement from senior UNICEF leaders.
  • Leading the growth of the UNICEF International Council and NextGen Principals and ensuring high level stewardship of those members.
  • Driving the development of a stronger culture of philanthropy across UNICEF.

New Business

  • Leading in the identification and cultivation strategies for $1M+ prospects in collaboration with local specialists.
  • Inspiring and facilitating participation and collaboration in the billionaire strategy.
  • Managing collaboration with local markets on international prospects.

Developing Initiatives / Offers

  • Developing global stewardship offers of engagement.
  • Developing thought leadership on new forms of recognition for UHNWI donors.

Cross-Cutting

  • Accountability for tracking and analyzing income and KPIs for markets.
  • Lead on the creation of annual strategic plans for top markets (including Joint Strategic Planning process).
  • Overseeing global philanthropy investment funding.
  • Representing Global Philanthropy team at external events.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

  • An advanced university degree is required in one of the following fields: Fundraising/Philanthropy, Communication, Marketing, International Relations, International Development, Business, Social Sciences, or another relevant technical field.
  • Alternatively, a first-level university degree in a relevant area combined with an additional 2 years of professional experience in a relevant field may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in philanthropy and fundraising, including at least 5 years of experience in major gift fundraising, is required.
  • Experience in managing a team is desirable.
  • Experience in cultivating and securing high-value gifts is required.
  • Experience in developing fundraising strategies is required.
  • Knowledge of the UN system and familiarity with UNICEF programme is desirable.

Others:

  • Practiced communicator with demonstrated ability to condense information and capture and communicate it in a well-structured way.

Language requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required. Excellent writing and editing skills in English are required.
  • * The incumbent for the Asian market, fluency in Japanese is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.
