Overview

Lead full-stack software development to support digital public goods.

You have:

  • An advanced university degree (master’s or higher) in computer science, engineering or other relevant fields.
  • A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in full-stack software development.
  • Strong handle on various programming languages and frameworks such as React JS, Vue JS, Angular JS, Node JS, ES6, TypeScript to build full-stack mobile and web applications.
  • Extensive experience with system integration, interface design, API development.
  • Experience working with large sets of data and databases.
  • Strong working knowledge of version control systems, pull requests.
  • Strong working experience with continuous integration and deployment pipelines / DevOps.
  • Experience with building and deploying blockchain Dapps is an asset.
  • A history of contributions to open-source communities.
  • Knowledge of the environment in which UNICEF operates and understanding the constraints of working in a developing-world environment.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

How can you make a difference?

We are looking for strong, self-motivated, Full-Stack Software Developers who can maintain the quality of their work even under tight time constraints and who can work with a diverse interdisciplinary team to help us build different tools and products that support the successful implementation of digital public goods.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  1. Lead the development and maintenance of digital infrastructure in support of the work on digital public goods.
  2. Crowdsource and incentivize contributions to digital public goods.
  3. Provide support, mentorship and capacity building to Digital Public Goods teams and their open communities.
  4. Build, Improve and maintain internally managed products, not just from a code / repo quality perspective but also as closely aligned as possible with the DPG Standard (https://digitalpublicgoods.net/standard/)
  5. Contribute to the exploration of various decentralized projects through architecting and developing various blockchain based web and mobile applications.
  6. Provide technical guidance and input to the Venture Fund team, Country Offices and start-ups from the Fund’s portfolio. responsibilities / deliverables.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in full-stack software development. Ability to conceptualize system architecture is a plus.
  • Strong handle on various programming languages and frameworks such as React JS, Vue JS, Angular JS, Node JS, ES6, TypeScript to build full-stack mobile and web applications.
  • Extensive experience with system integration, interface design, API development
  • Experience working with large sets of data and databases.
  • Strong working knowledge of version control systems, pull requests.
  • Strong working experience with continuous integration and deployment pipelines / DevOps.
  • Experience with building and deploying blockchain Dapps is an asset (using tools such as Solidity, Ether.js, Web3.js, Ganache, Truffle, Metamask, Infura etc.)
  • A history of contributions to open-source communities.
  • Knowledge of the environment in which UNICEF operates and understanding the constraints of working in a developing-world environment. This should include experience developing low-bandwidth applications in challenging work environments.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Payment details and further considerations

  • Payment of professional fees will be based on the submission of agreed deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
