Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Plumbing Shop of the Mechanical and Plumbing Unit (MPU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports to the General Foreperson of the MPU.

The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the General Foreperson of the Mechanical and Plumbing Unit (MPU), the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

-Supervise technicians to ensure the progress, quality and completion of the work assignments; -Coordinate and supervise work of outside contractors; -Plan projects received from the General Foreperson up to the higher level authority of the United Nations; -Requisition materials, tools, hardware according to the blueprint specifications and rough drawings; -Estimate, price and order materials according to requirement of each particular project and estimate time and manpower requirements of each project; -Coordinate with other Departments and Shops to ensure proper operation and completion of each job; -Communicate daily with shop personnel, offices outside the building and contractors; -Train new personnel, even experienced personnel when the project or job is not familiar with their trade; -Responsible for paperwork such as work orders received through the iNeed System and reports of completion of job requested; -Other miscellaneous assignment such as personnel utilization, monthly reports, drawing of sketches, handling work orders, telephone calls and trips to stores, Sutton Place (SG's Residence) etc.; -Other related duties as may be assigned by the General Foreperson or the Chief of the Plant Engineering Section.

Education High School or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.

Work Experience A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in general building maintenance or related trade is required. Work experience as a plumber in an organization comparable to the UN Secretariat or large private sector plumbing shop is required. Experience in servicing or replacing high pressure steam for plumbing/heating systems, including experience in the use of hand and power tools related to trade is required. Experience in processing work orders through an automated Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system is desirable. Experience as a supervisor is desirable. Experience in the electrical field and with electric motor and motor controls is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year.

This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

Passing the Trades and Crafts Test (TCT) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the Trades and Crafts category in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the TCT at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Staff members who were granted a fixed-term, continuing or permanent appointment as a result of having passed a predecessor test recognized by the Office of Human Resources Management, and who have continuously held such appointments, are not required to take the new test.

The selected candidate will be required to perform late night shifts including weekends on rotation, in order to perform assignments including maintenance works that require off-hours as well as to provide prompt response in case of emergencies sometimes exposed to difficult weather conditions. A N.Y.S. Backflow Certification or equivalent is required. Copy of your certificate must be included with your application.

Staff Members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
