Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Chief of Information Systems or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Forensic Scientist will:

  • Conduct examinations of digital evidence seized from ISIL (Da'esh) terrorists (mobile phones, laptops, desktops, external hard disks, electronic documents and files, networks and other forms of data storage devices) and forensic examinations of electronic documents and files, such as photographs and videos for enhancement and face/voice identifications;
  • Performs evidence handling and custodial obligations by ensuring a forensically sound collection, preservation, registration, digitization, and secure permanent storage of collected material and maintaining its chain of custody, provenance taxonomies, auditing, and authenticity;
  • Assists OFI with translating the objectives of investigations into technical activities and examination of electronic content;
  • Participates in the preparation of technical and investigative reports in relation to the aforementioned forensic examinations, capable of supporting criminal court proceedings; and works collaboratively and in coordination with colleagues to achieve organizational goals in accordance with standard operating procedures and in compliance with organizational regulations and rules.
  • Assist in the preparation of field missions, including the preparation of forensic equipment, hardware, software and consumables;
  • Prepares technical documentation, gathers requirements, and initiates standardization of practices related to the collection, handling and analysis of digital evidence;
  • Provides training on forensic data acquisition, preservation and analysis for UNITAD national counterparts;
  • Liaises and provides consulting services to downstream third-party judicial and prosecutorial entities regarding technical aspects of review, analysis and information retrieval;
  • Identifies opportunities for the improvement of evidence collection, storage, processing and analysis processes that delivers value for UNITAD investigations;
  • Proposes the use of tools to analyze and present complex data sets in understandable ways for investigation and presentation purposes;
  • Test and validate forensic tools are working as expected and with the specified performance;
  • Proactively identify and escalate issues and risks pertaining to his area of responsibility;
  • Participate as required in targeted field-based investigations in order to obtain digital evidence relevant to the investigations, sometimes through direct engagement with suspects, victims and witnesses; and
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

• Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant area, e.g. digital forensic or area related to eDiscovery; a first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;

Experience remark:

  • The Forensic Scientist must have a minimum of 2 years of experience working in forensic science. At least 2 year of experience in digital forensic and 1 year working on eDiscovery solutions. The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in crime scene investigations, forensic physics & digital examinations. In addition, the candidate must have extensive prior experience with the following applications, services and practices:
  • Tableau software, FTK Imager, XWays, Encase, dc3dd
  • Cellebrite PA, Elcomsoft, MSAB XRY
  • SQL Server, Cosmos DB or MongoDB
  • Griffeye, Amped
  • Nuix
  • Relativity
  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Synology NAS
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Photographic skills
  • Chemistry (forensic analysis will require lab work)
  • Cellular Biology (forensic analysis will require lab work)
  • Present Technical Concepts to Diverse Audiences
  • Python
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;

  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Desirable: valid national driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain;
