JUSTIFICATION TO ESTABLISH NEW ROLE:

The United Nations World Food Programme is the leading humanitarian organization, and the core mandate and strengths centre around three priorities: saving lives in emergency situations; improving the nutrition and quality of life of the most vulnerable people; and helping to build assets and promote the self-reliance of poor people and communities.

Within the context of an increased donor interest in local purchase, as well as an increased demand to cater for more complex response to the needs of beneficiaries with diverse food baskets, Food Safety and Quality has been identified as a major priority for WFP and the CO.

The WFP Country Office, based in Kinshasa, The Democratic Republic the Congo, is looking to fill a position of Food Technologist within the Supply Chain Unit to support the design and implementation of projects within various programmes of the Country Strategic Plan 2021-2024 (CSP) - capacity strengthening of local partners in various areas of work such as smallholder farmer, local fortification and food processing, local procurement, farm-gate, and post-harvest losses management. The Food Technologist is expected to systematically integrate aspects of Food Safety and Quality Management System (FSQMS) across all activities.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The role of the Food Technologist will be to support the effective design and the practical implementation of local food system projects, integrating Food Safety and Quality Management System across all activities.

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Food Technologist will report directly to the Head of Food Safety and Quality Unit in Kinshasa. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with various internal stakeholders (Supply chain, Programme/Resilience, Food Safety and Quality (RB/HQ)) as well as external stakeholders (Government, suppliers, international organisations, donors etc.).

The incumbent will work on following tasks:

  • Effective implementation of FSQ procedures/protocols upstream: Management of local suppliers and purchases & downstream in suboffices
  • Capacity Strengthening of partners and stakeholders
  • Effective implementation of DRC’s Food Incident Management system
  • Build and maintain effective partnerships – internal & external
  • Perform any other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • At least 4 years of professional experience in food technology and nutrition / fortification related project implementation, building capacity of and working with complex and high-level networks of stakeholders (Government, international organisations, private sector, farmers).

EDUCATION:

  • A university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Food Technology / Food Processing, Agronomy, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in developing and managing food safety and quality related projects operational supply chain strategies in a country.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated ability to work productively in remote and high-pressure environments, maintain morale and deliver on objectives in difficult circumstances.
  • Willingness to share expertise, experience, and knowledge in the form of manuals, trainings, lectures, and practical hands-on intervention in the field.
  • Previous experience working in the Democratic Republic of Congo is an asset.

LANGUAGES:

  • Intermediate knowledge (level B) of French language and Intermediate knowledge (level B) of English language.
