Overall purpose of the role: Under the overall supervision of the FSL Team Leader, the FSL Assistant will support the FSL Officers in the implementation of activities in the assigned area of responsibility: community mobilization, assessment and distribution of food and seeds for agriculture, training in agronomic skills and in harvest handling and management, distribution of food assistance. The job holder monitors the usage of inputs, and provides support in organizing trainings, as guided by FSL Officer, in accordance with recommended methodologies and tools, and in line with DRC policies and guidelines. He/she will be working in cooperation with DRC’s Livelihoods and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEAL) teams and in collaboration with local authorities and communities. The FSL Assistant works under the direct supervision of FSL Officers and overall management of FSL Team Leader.

Responsibilities:

Programme

  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of programme activities related to Food Security and Livelihoods. To this end, support the FSL Officer and Team Leader in producing and updating monthly workplans and implement programme activities accordingly.
  • Effectively use and comply with all the tools, forms and SOPs related to FSL as communicated by the FSL Team Leader. Comply with applicable professional standards related to FSL and humanitarian interventions.
  • Contribute to the quality of DRC’s community outreach approach by effectively identifying and coordinating with community mobilizers/outreach volunteers (COVs), community-based protection networks (CBPNs) and other community focal points. To this end, ensure that community mobilizers and focal points represent a diversity of backgrounds, profiles and locations so as to support DRC’s capacity to reach the individuals who are the most in need of FSL assistance.
  • Ensure that individuals in need of Protection assistance, identified through FSL activities, are timely and adequately referred to the Protection Team. Equally ensure to timely follow up on internal and external referrals received from DRC Protection Team or from other organizations.
  • Conduct information dissemination and capacity-building activities with communities on FSL related topics in safe and suitable locations.
  • Carry out FSL assessments or participate to multi-sector assessments led by DRC or by partner organizations, with the aim at collecting FSL data in the target communities.
  • Conduct any other programme activities related to the provision of FSL services and assistance as instructed by the FSL Officer and Team Leader.
  • Mobilize and build strong rapport with communities through consistent engagement with community-based structures and adhering to dignified, culturally sensitive approaches.
  • Support community-based structures by facilitating meaningful group dialogue and mentoring participants to self-identify protection concerns that affect their communities.
  • Support the FSL Officer and Team Leader in planning and carrying out joint activities with local partner organizations.
  • If required by the Project and in cooperation with the Protection Team, carry out distribution of Multi-Purpose Cash and Non-Food Items to most vulnerable individuals in the targeted communities.

Monitoring and Reporting

Produce quality and accurate reports and supporting documentation on FSL activities and ensure their timely submission to the FSL Officer and FSL Team Leader for review and internal information sharing. To this end, ensure that both the hard and

  • soft copies of all activity reports are safely archived. Overall, effectively use the tools and comply with the processes related to monitoring and reporting, including through the use of shared drive and dedicated platforms for information management.

Representation and coordination

  • Represent DRC and the programme towards a wide range of stakeholders including individual beneficiaries, community mobilizers, community-based structures’ members and focals points. To this end, ensure professional standards and transparent communication in the external representation of the organization so as to build trust and ensure effective collaboration with all concerned stakeholders.
  • Ensure that all interactions with individual beneficiaries take place in an environment and in a way that respect and promote the individuals’ safety, agency and dignity in accordance with professional standards for protection and humanitarian work.

Operations support

Support the coordination of programme support activities as they relate to logistics, administration or security as relevant, under the guidance and supervision of the FSL Team Leader and in coordination with the relevant departments. Comply with all relevant internal policies and directives.

Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

  • 2 years of experience with NGO or other development actors including at least 1 year in FSL sector
  • Knowledge of the targeted areas (Kadugli, Delling, Habila) and local communities is required.
  • Ability to work in the field
  • Experience working in and familiarity with South Kordofan
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer skills (especially MS Excel and MS Word) is an asset

Education: (include certificates, licenses etc.)

BSc, preferably in agriculture

Languages: (indicate fluency level)

  • Fluency in spoken and written Arabic
  • Basic spoken and written English
