Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. The internship is in the SDG Localization and Local Governments Unit, Urban Practices Branch, Global Solutions Division, UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya. The SDG Localization and Local Governments Unit within the Urban Practices Branch requires the support of an intern in the areas of finance, budget, and admin. While gaining the much-needed practical experience on their part, the intern will assist the SDG Localization and Local Governments Team with Administrative, Finance and Budget support functions closure of prior year audit recommendations and coordination of corrective actions related to issues highlighted in weekly budget performance reports. The Finance & Admin internship is for six (6) months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days (35 hours) per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the direct supervision of the Associate Human Settlements Officer, the intern will contribute in the following ways; Finance and budgets: - Review all grants created in the period to ensure they have adequate supporting documentation attached. - Assist in reviewing of outstanding implementing partner balances and liaising with respective offices and divisions for timely clearance. - Liaises with project Management Officers (PMOs) and Project Management Assistants to implement actions identified by the status of allotment reports. - Coordinate with other finance staff for troubleshooting and responding to enquiries in respect to relevant financial matters. - Assist with preparation of quarterly and monthly financial reports for management and donors. - Assist with review of UMOJA financial transactions, commitments, and pre-commitments to ensure timely liquidation of commitments for compliance with IPSAS reporting. Administrative Support: - Assist in reviewing and monitoring grant commitments under SDG localization team. - Assist in drafting and preparing official documents, routine correspondence reports related to financial and admin matters. - Assist in providing logistical support during meetings and conferences. - Maintain an online and physical filing system for key documents. - Assist in keeping accurate records of the financial situation of recruitment, subcontracts, and payments. - Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of studies: Bachelor's Degree (BA/BSc) in Accounting, Commerce, Business Administration or any other related studies. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
