Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the government, UN-organizations, and development partners, have been working to restore tree cover in the degraded forest area in Cox’s Bazar since 2018. As a continuation of the degraded land restoration support, FAO is implementing several projects with the multi-donor fund. These projects will also continue the FAO’s commitment to environmental rehabilitation and economic support for the local communities. The restoration of ecological balance to the targeted area is a core commitment to creating sustainable livelihoods. Besides, these projects contribute to the improvement of households’ food security in introducing improved agricultural technologies and development opportunities for host communities to get economic benefits from the wider markets created due to the Rohingya influx.

FAO’s integrated approach to sustainability across agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors is guided by three principles to facilitate the transition to greater sustainability: i) improving efficiency in the use of resources; ii) direct action to conserve, protect and enhance natural resources; and iii) protecting and improving rural livelihoods and social well-being.
