This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Head of UN-Habitat Iraq or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Field Engineer will:

  • Provide technical guidance and support to projects in southern governorates implemented by UN-Habitat Iraq Programme;
  • Supervise and monitor implementing partners and contractors on site, on a daily basis, to ensure project activities are implemented with quality, in a cost-effective and timely manner;
  • Prepare, organize and conduct damage assessments of housing, infrastructure and public spaces;
  • Prepare survey and assessment reports;
  • Prepare bill of quantities;
  • Ensure participatory approach and support establishment of and regular communication with Community Development Committees;
  • Gather information and consolidate data and ensure it is reflected in relevant databases;
  • Prepare and submit progress report on project activities in southern governorates on a weekly basis and/or as instructed;
  • Serve as UN-Habitat focal point in Basra to coordinate and liaise with stakeholders including the government counterparts, other UN agencies, NGOs and implementing partners, specific to this project; and

  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a relevant area
    • At least 3 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level after receipt of the required academic qualification in construction, engineering or related field.
    • Experience in project management and supervision is desirable.
    • Experience within the United Nations common system is desirable.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;

  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in urban recovery volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Area of expertise details:

  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
