This is a UNV National University contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National University contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment. Candidates must be students of any academic program (BA/BSc, Masters, PhD) and keep this status during the whole period of the volunteer assignment.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of senior civil engineer , National UN Youth Volunteer will:

The main obligation of the youth volunteers is to supervise the construction and the rehabilitation works of housing in the mentioned above locations.

  1. House construction:
    • Observe and supervise the work performed by the labours (skilled and unskilled) for reconstruction compliance with the drawings and specifications, in line with PALPOC 's resilient construction standards
    • Assist in approving standards of construction materials and tools before being used in the work.
    • Guide to technical person of Implementing Partner (IP) (NGO/CSOs) where require, request material testing to the designated Laboratory to test for compliance with quality standards and technical specifications.
    • Identify potential variations between program and probable completion dates and propose corrective measures to ensure effective and quality delivery of the planned tasks.
    • Assist in performing final inspections of each component of the work for compliance certification.
    • Ensure that the construction/renovation sites are neat and clean as far as possible.
    • Provide inputs in preparing the monthly report of the NGO/CSOs.
    • Guide, recommend and supervise to labors (skilled and unskilled) to ensure safety measures are implemented.
    • supervise, monitor, provide guidance and recommendations based on the agreed standards of resilient construction of PALPOC. Additionally, provide recommendations on the spot to the communities and Artisan for any issues they may face.
    • Provide technical assistance for the design of BOQs, drawings and project requirements to be implemented by the Mozambique Recovery Facility Program in BEIRA.
  • House self-repair.
    • Assist to conduct the comprehensive door-to-door damage assessment covering the entire targeting areas for houses repair. The assessment should occur once and be accurate and conclusive. A detailed survey is important for assessing the degree and scale of damage to the housing stock under consistently applicable engineering requirements and according the standards of resilient construction of PALPOC.
    • Prepare BOQs according to the result of assessment.

  1. Technical assistance for the UNDP Mozambique Recovery Facility Program in BEIRA.
    • Participate in the assessment processes of the targeted locations in order to identify the needed plan including the procedures, items and equipment.
    • Participate in preparing the required Bill of Quantities (BoQs) of the relevant renovation and construction activities.
    • Respond to queries arise from procurement unit and review committees related to BoQs and technical specifications.
    • Participate in pre-bid meetings and respond to queries from potential national bidders if related to BoQs and technical specifications.
    • Participate in Technical Review panels for submitted bids and review all bids against the approved BoQs and technical specifications.
    • To participate in supervise all locations of building and provide updates, recommendation to UNDP
    • To participate in checking materials received at construction/renovation sites.
    • Monitor Recovery activities with NGOs and report the progress to the project management.
    • Participate in Coordination between UNDP and local authorities and civil society on all the ongoing activities

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Last semester in university /or fresh graduate (Civil engineer or architect)
