Job Description

Scope of Intern Work:This position supports our Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Program by helping parents access healthy foods through the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) government benefit program. The process of applying and using WIC benefits is difficult, even for English speakers. The MCH program has enlisted volunteers to help clients learn how to travel to their WIC clinic and use benefits at the grocery store. The Family Nutrition Access Intern will be responsible for scheduling WIC appointments, overseeing volunteers, and improving the functioning of this program.

The IRC SLC office is partially reopened. Intern should be available to work one day per week in the office as well as remotely. Must be able to work independently and be flexible to a changing work environment.

Responsibilities:

• Schedule WIC appointments and volunteers; Confirm appointments and interpretation

• If available, liaise with volunteers to troubleshoot during appointments

• Track completion of WIC appointments and grocery orientations

• Communicate progress and challenges with supervisor

• Help create, present, distribute, and evaluate educational material

• Additional tasks to assist with MCH Program as needed

• Office duties: Transport a client to a health appointment weekly; Complete Office Support shift monthly

Additional Opportunities:

• Create monthly communications to keep volunteers up to date and engaged

• Document lessons learned

• Recruit and train new volunteers

Learning Objectives:

1. The intern will expand experience communicating, educating, and working with diverse populations.

2. The intern will gain management skills, supervising and training WIC volunteers.

3. The intern will improve professional skills, working as a team member in a cross-cultural environment.

Commitment: 16 weeks starting in May 2022, 10-15 hours per week

Qualifications

Requirements:

• Must be currently enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate program, or have graduated less than 6 months ago

• Background in public health, social work, health promotion OR other related fields

• Experience working with diverse populations

• Self-motivated, flexible, patient and able to work independently

• Detail oriented and creative problem solver

• Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

• Must be able to prioritize and manage time effectively

• Must have reliable means of transportation for transporting clients

This is an unpaid internship position. No financial compensation, including compensation for relocation, is available.
