The Republic of Moldova (hereinafter “Moldova”) has shown remarkable solidarity with Ukrainian refugees, hosting a population that makes up 4% of its total. Since February 2022, there have been over 1.9M refugee arrivals from Ukraine. While most continued west to the EU, as of December 2024, around 135,861 Ukrainian refugees and 10,000 third-country nationals remained – 58% female, 43% children, ~23% older persons, and 10% people with disabilities. In close cooperation with the Government, UNHCR helps coordinate a multi-sectoral humanitarian response to support those displaced as well as the communities that host them.

UNHCR Moldova in Chisinau is looking for an intern to join our team and be part of this refugee response.

The position:

The selected person will be joining the External Relations team, responsible for reporting, donor relations and resource mobilization, communication, and coordination for advocacy purposes with the civil society, other UN agencies, government, donors, and private sector. We are looking for a dynamic student or graduate, who has an interest in humanitarian issues, moreover a commitment to refugees, and a desire to develop their skills and experience in the humanitarian sector, in specific communications (including web-based and social media), advocacy, reporting, and event management. All candidates should be computer literate in Microsoft Office, have excellent writing skills (In English) as well as the ability to always maintain a high level of confidentiality. Knowledge on refugee issues and work with vulnerable populations would be an asset.

Good interpersonal skills, adaptability, and attention to detail are essential.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Create and maintain good relationships with refugees to build trust and amplify their voices through Refugee-led events and content development. • Contribute to an inclusive programming, advocating for human rights, gender equality, diversity and the active participation of refugees in UNHCR’s initiatives. • Assist the implementation of a communications strategy that generates support for UNHCR’s operations from external partners (e.g. the general public, governments, partners, media, academia, NGOs, private sector and persons of concern). • Contribute to UNHCR-led activities by assisting in the conceptualization of the activity itself, supporting its organization, and coordination with other units. • Support the preparation for meetings and missions with government donors, drafting of agendas and talking points, and support the logistics of the mission with other units. • Assist the development of periodic reports, i.e. donor updates, fact-sheets, briefing notes for senior managers, and activity-specific reports as required. • Provide support to the daily running of the External Relations unit..

Minimum qualifications required:

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria: • Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Desirable qualifications and skills:

• The candidate must be interested in the humanitarian and external relations work. • General computer skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). • Analytical thinking skills • Advance English is required. • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing. • Interest in organising and participating in public events. • Ability to work as part of a multicultural team. • Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks.

Conditions: It is a full-time role (40 hours per week). The office is however flexible, and if successful candidate can work part-time, the working hours may be negotiated. The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Chisinau, Moldova.

Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses. The allowance for full-time internship equals to 70% of the GS grade 3 Step 1 i.e. 13,142.73 MDL. The actual payment will be calculated based on the percentage worked.
