Background Information - Job-specific

United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a partnership between UNEP and the Global Financial sector to mobilize private sector finance for sustainable development.

UNEP FI works with more than 460 banks, insurers, investors, and over 160 supporting institutions- to help create a financial sector that serves people and the planet while delivering positive impacts. UNEP FI aims to inspire, inform, and enable financial institutions to improve people’s quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

The initiative supports the implementation of programmes at a regional level across Africa; the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America & the Caribbean, and North America. UNEP FI convenes financial institutions to advance knowledge and practice in areas including, climate, nature, pollution & circular economy, the SDGs & impact, and social issues. Also, this initiative convenes three finance sector ‘net-zero” alliances, and is working with key stakeholders to help members align portfolios with science-based greenhouse gas emissions pathways through interim targets:

1. Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (‘AOA’): Launched in 2019, with more than 70 institutional asset owners.

2. Net Zero Banking Alliance (‘NZBA’): Launched in 2021 with over 115 banks, the majority of NZBA members are PRB signatories that are setting ambitious climate targets.

3. Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (‘NZIA’) Launched in 2021, convening 30 leading insurers representing about 12% of world premiums, working together to establish the transition to net-zero insurance.

In this context, the UNOPS objective is to provide full operational support to UNEP for the project entitled “UNEP Finance Initiative”

Functional Responsibilities

Under the day-to-day supervision of the Head of the Unit, the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) the incumbent will be responsible for UNEP FI’s global communications management and events planning. The role involves implementing a global communications strategy that has clear objectives, messaging, and transmission channels for each target audience; maintaining a strong brand for UNEP FI, including impactful and fit-for-purpose communications with a specific focus on messaging for key stakeholder groups (financial institutions, members, governments, etc.); developing and executing effective media strategy; managing a team of communications professionals.

1. Develop, plan, and execute digital meetings and events for UNEP FI, ensuring a high-quality experience for all participants.

  1. Work closely with internal stakeholders to identify event objectives, target audience, and messaging for each event.

  2. Coordinate with external vendors, speakers, and partners to ensure seamless execution of events.

  3. Manage event budgets and timelines, ensuring that all events are delivered within budget and on schedule.

  4. Develop and implement project and topic-related communication strategies for events, with a specific focus on messaging for key stakeholder groups.

  5. Develop and coordinate content for event websites, social media, and UNEP FI communications material to build internal and external visibility and increase interest among key stakeholder groups.

  6. Coordinate internal UN communications processes related to events.

  7. Establish key tracking and performance indicators and review web metrics and social media reports for events.

  8. Coordinate UNEP FI’s social media channels for events, including writing content and posting.

  9. Assist with the development of event-related websites and other web requirements with the digital coordinator.

  10. Coordinate members’ extranet content and updates related to events.

  11. Support UNEP FI’s coordination on communications and publications processes with UNEP and UN HQ related to events.

  12. Lead and support team members on press engagement related to events, maintaining a high-quality media database and media monitoring reports as needed.

    The incumbent’s primary role involves supporting and implementing events and a global digital communications strategy for UNEP. Your responsibilities include developing, planning, and executing meetings and events to ensure a high-quality experience for all participants. You will closely collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify communication and event objectives, target audiences, and messaging.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education : - Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent preferably) in one of the following: environment, sustainable development, communications, marketing, international relations, social studies or a related field is required. - A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience :

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area.
  • Previous experience working with the private finance sector, including with banks, institutional investors, and others is desired.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing work programs for stakeholders in an international organization setting or with the finance sector is desired.

    Languages :

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
