You have:

  • Master’s or higher degree in a relevant discipline (social sciences) or a first-level university degree in combination with five additional years of qualifying experience.
  • A minimum of 7 years of demonstrated experience in designing and conducting evaluations in the area of sustainable development, particularly its economic, social and environmental dimensions.
  • Experience with designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative research and data collection methods, including interviews and surveys.
  • Experience in the areas of sustainable development and/or infrastructure planning/development is an added advantage and is desirable.
  • Experience working in diverse cultural settings and demonstrated cultural sensitivity is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Global Compact is the United Nations' voluntary corporate sustainability initiative in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. It revolves around ten universal principles drawn from four key international instruments in these areas.

The Global Compact Office is the United Nations entity responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Global Compact initiative. It pursues two complementary objectives: (1) making the Global Compact and its principles part of business strategy and operations everywhere; and (2) facilitating cooperation among key stakeholders by promoting partnerships and collective action in support of United Nations, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The United Nations Global Compact has been executing the project on Implementing 2030 Agenda through UNGC Action Platform on Sustainable Infrastructure for the Belt and Road Initiative to Accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals, which is supported by the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund. This project aims to implement the 2030 Agenda through a global action platform established by the UN Global Compact to engage companies participating in BRI infrastructure projects to align with the Ten Principles of the Global Compact in order to accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. The Global Operations team of the Global Compact Office based in China is leading the execution of the project.

Responsibilities: under the supervision of the Project Manager, the Evaluation Consultant will be responsible for the following:

• Conduct an initial desk review of relevant documents to understand the project context and evaluation framework.

• Prepare an inception report detailing the finalized scope and focus of the evaluation, including evaluation questions, methodology, information on data sources, sampling methods, key indicators, and draft data collection instruments (e.g., interview guides, survey questionnaires).

• Execute data collection and analysis as per the finalized methodology, including communicating with identified stakeholders to gather relevant information and insights.

• Develop an evidence matrix to present a summary of the evidence collected through each data collection method, categorized by evaluation question.

• Prepare a draft evaluation report based on a predefined template for review by the Project Manager.

• Revise and finalize the evaluation report based on feedback and comments received.

• Develop summary slide deck on the key findings and recommendations based on the final evaluation report.

Qualifications/special skills

Master’s or higher degree in a relevant discipline (social sciences, e.g., political science, economics, sociology, international relations, public policy, international development), or a first-level university degree in combination with five additional years of qualifying experience. A minimum of 7 years of demonstrated experience in designing and conducting evaluations in the area of sustainable development, particularly its economic, social and environmental dimensions, and/or other internationally agreed development goals, including a minimum of 5 years internationally. Experience with designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative research and data collection methods, including interviews and surveys is required. Experience in the areas of sustainable development and/or infrastructure planning/development is an added advantage and is desirable. Experience working in diverse cultural settings and demonstrated cultural sensitivity is desirable.

Languages

English and French are two working languages at the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required.
