THE ROLE AND ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

About this role

WFP is a leader in the UN system in environmental sustainability and is seeking an appropriately qualified consultant to support the implementation of the WFP Environmental Policy and related projects that improve the environmental sustainability of WFP’s operations worldwide. The selected consultant will work remotely and will report to the Environmental Sustainability Manager, under the daily supervision of senior Environmental Unit staff.

Responsibilities:

• Working as part of a small project team, contribute to WFP’s annual environmental footprint reporting exercise, involving the collection, review, analysis and reporting of data from colleagues globally in the areas of:
  • Energy/fuel use, official travel, and other activities that contribute to WFP’s GHG footprint;
  • Water use and wastewater disposal;
  • Waste generation and management;
  • Sustainable procurement;
  • Actions taken to reduce WFP’s environmental footprint
• Assist in documenting the results of this annual footprinting exercise and other corporate environmental reporting in narrative form for a range of internal/external audiences. Working collaboratively with team members and branch/divisional communications officers, coordinate the Environmental Unit’s presence on WFPgo, serving as the unit’s designated WFPgo editor and contributing to content for external audiences (such as WFP.org and the UN-wide Greening the Blue website)
• Research and write articles and short case studies for publication, develop environmental awareness-raising materials for use in educational campaigns and events that foster sustainable behaviours at work;
• Review and maintain a logical information management structure for the Environmental Unit, including environmental mgt system progress updates and all records of team media assets.
• Contribute to the development of corporate tools, templates and other materials for identifying, assessing, managing and reporting on WFP’s environmental impacts related to: energy/greenhouse gas (GHG), waste and water, sustainable procurement and resource efficiency, pollution prevention and other relevant aspects as required.
• Respond to queries from field colleagues on environmental issues; contribute to the implementation of WFP’s Environmental Management System and related environmental improvement projects at HQ and field locations and assist in documenting projects and activities in corporate environmental reporting mechanisms;
• Contribute to other environmental initiatives undertaken by the team, as directed by the assigned supervisor.

Who are we looking for?

Education:

• University degree (Bachelor’s degree or higher) in Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management or similar, or degree related to Knowledge Management and including environmental management modules;
• Formal training in environmental management systems (EMS), environmental impact assessment (EIA), corporate environmental reporting standards, sustainable procurement or life cycle assessment (LCA) will be highly regarded.
• Associate, practitioner-level or other competency-based entry-level membership of a relevant professional organization (SocEnv, AAEE etc) will also be highly regarded.

Experience:

• At least three (3) years of postgraduate experience in corporate environmental sustainability management in areas such as: corporate sustainability reporting, environmental management systems (EMS), environmental programme delivery; environmental communications; energy/water/waste/natural resource management, sustainable procurement;
• Prior experience working within, or in connection with, a UN system organization or in the humanitarian sector is desirable. Prior experience working in, or supporting projects based in, developing countries will be highly regarded.
• Proven ability to successfully operate within the different geographic and cultural contexts in which WFP operates. In-depth understanding of environmental and social sustainability and links with food security
• Professional experience working within, or in connection with, the UN system is highly regarded.

Knowledge & Skills:

• Working knowledge of international environmental footprinting standards including the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
• Working knowledge of at least two of the following disciplines: waste management, energy/GHG management, water management, environmental compliance, and sustainable procurement, preferably in a developing country/humanitarian context;
• Proficiency in MS Office software, particularly Excel and communication tools;
• Ability to expertly write and translate complex concepts for a variety of audiences, with the ability to facilitate events /meetings and write reports for internal and external reports.
• Persuasive public speaking skills and proven ability to coordinate and effectively communicate across multiple units and departments (including headquarters, regional, and country office levels) and with external private and public parties/stakeholders
• Ability to work and coordinate with multiple teams and with offices in remote locations;
• Proven ability to successfully operate within the different geographic and cultural contexts in which WFP operates. In-depth understanding of environmental and social sustainability and links with food security

Languages:

• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
• Proficiency in a second UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, or WFP's working language, Portuguese) to at least an intermediate standard is highly regarded
