BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
WFP strives to be a leader in environmental sustainability within the UN system. In pursuit of this goal, WFP’s Environmental policy, adopted in February 2017, commits the organization to avoiding unintended harm to the environment, its beneficiaries, or any other affected populations as a result of our operations and programmes, and to maximise environmental benefits. The policy builds on a decade of work at WFP to monitor and manage environmental impacts including energy and greenhouse gas emissions, waste, water and wastewater, and to encourage environmental improvement through sustainable procurement, staff awareness raising, behaviour change and training, in line with UN-wide action to ‘walk the talk’ on environmental sustainability management.
WFP seeks an appropriately qualified environmental consultant (CST) to coordinate WFP’s existing environmental footprinting and reporting process, including related support services to HQ and field-based colleagues. The position is remote and reports to the Environmental Sustainability Manager within the Infrastructure and Facilities Management Branch (MSDI).
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Co-ordinate a small team responsible for WFP’s annual environmental footprinting exercise for 2022, involving the collection, analysis and reporting of contributions from colleagues globally in the areas of:
- Energy/fuel use, official travel, and other activities that contribute to WFP’s GHG footprint;
- Water use and wastewater disposal;
- Waste generation and management;
- Sustainable procurement;
- Actions taken to reduce WFP’s environmental footprint
- Other indicators as required by WFP Management and interagency commitments
- Co-ordinate WFP’s footprint-related helpdesk/advisory function, providing technical and capacity building advice to queries from field colleagues, including ad-hoc training as necessary to facilitate accurate and timely data collection.
- Oversee internal and external reporting of final footprint results through Tableau, including completion of UNEP-specific reporting requirements according to Greening the Blue annual reporting criteria and deadlines.
- Conduct after action review of the 2022 footprinting exercise to document lessons learned and recommendations for future improvements.
- Contribute to refinement of corporate tools, templates and other guidance materials related to the annual environmental footprinting exercise.
- Contribute to other environmental initiatives undertaken by the team, as directed by the Environmental Sustainability Manager.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT
- Environmental footprint data (compiled Q1-Q2 of each year, for the previous calendar year) completed in line with all relevant international standards and submitted to required internal and external audiences, within agreed timeframes.
- Footprint related training and support delivered is documented.
- After action review findings documented, including recommendations for future improvement processes.
- Updates to guidance materials are tracked.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
An advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in one of the following areas: Environmental Studies, Environmental Management, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
- Formal training and/or accreditation in ISO14001, international environmental footprinting standards, and/or sustainable procurement will be highly regarded.
Experience:
At least five (5) years of postgraduate experience in corporate environmental sustainability reporting and related areas such as: environmental management systems (EMS), environmental programme delivery; environmental communications; sustainable procurement;
- Membership of a competency-based environmental professional body (Chartered Environmental, Certified Environmental Professional, or similar) will be highly regarded.
- Prior experience working within, or in connection with, a UN system organization or in the humanitarian sector will be highly regarded;
Detailed knowledge of international environmental footprinting standards including the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and the ARCHIBUS facilities management software.
- In-depth knowledge of at least two of the following disciplines: waste management, energy/GHG management, water management, environmental compliance, and sustainable procurement, preferably in a developing country/humanitarian context;
- Proficiency in MS Office software, particularly Excel and communication tools;
- Ability to expertly write and translate complex concepts for a variety of audiences, with the ability to facilitate training sessions write reports for internal and external audiences.
- Proven ability to coordinate and effectively communicate across multiple units and departments (including headquarters, regional, and country office levels) and with external private and public parties/stakeholders
- Ability to work and coordinate with multiple teams and with offices in remote locations;
- Proven ability to successfully operate within the different geographic and cultural contexts in which WFP operates. In-depth understanding of environmental and social sustainability and links with food security;
Languages:
Excellent written and spoken English (level C) is required.
Intermediate (Level B) or better knowledge of another WFP official language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish or WFP’s working language Portuguese) is desirable.
