Work Location Home-based

Expected duration 5 months

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Each UN organization has committed since 2013 to the implementation of an environmental management system. This commitment is further confirmed in the UN Sustainability Strategy on Environmental management with the target that all UN entities should have an EMS in place by 2025. This work is coordinated by UNEP via the Sustainable United Nations facility (SUN) and is delivered with the help of the interagency network of sustainability focal points (Issue Management Group on Environmental Sustainability Management-IMG). The Sustainable United Nations supports the development and implementation of such commitments via capacity building, helpdesk services and through a website that serves the UN system in implementing environmental management systems. An annual questionnaire on EMS is submitted by entities to the Greening the Blue. As of 2020, one of the criteria for EMS in the UN system is to periodically conduct an internal environmental audit. The 2020 Greening the Blue report shows that many UN entities do not yet have an internal audit in place. The SUN Unit requires data management and processing assistance to the Environmental Inventory Consultant for the completion of the 2022-2023 UN System environmental inventory for the publication of the Greening the Blue report 2023.

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Sustainable UN (SUN) and in collaboration with the Environmental Inventory consultant, the data management consultant will undertake the following responsibilities:

1. Contribute to the processing of environmental inventory data.

a. Correct potential errors and make improvements to formulas and macros in the calculator files used to process inventory submissions. b. Address issues in submitted files i.e. set up automated detection of input, or modify data forms to comply with the input format accepted by the calculators. c. As needed, team up with the Environmental Inventory Consultant in the actual processing of submissions. d. Collaborate with the inventory management consultant in the calculation of the environmental footprint of each UN entity as well as UN-wide for the publication in the Greening the Blue Report. Format inventory data for presentation in the 2022 Greening the Blue Report and website e. Set up automated mechanisms to extract and summarize data from a set of data files. f. Generate inventory data in other formats as requested

2. Analyse UN environmental data for use in decision making.

a. Analyse current and past inventory data as requested for the 2020-2030 UN Sustainability Strategy. b. Recover and back-calculate inventory data from previous years to create a historical baseline.
