In response to the above events, UNDP/PAPP has developed the “Medical Waste Management” and “Towards a Green Gaza: Improving Natural Resources Management, Reducing and Managing Waste, Creating Green Jobs” projects, which aim at protecting public health, environment and supporting the wellbeing of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

UNDP/PAPP is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Environmental Coordinator under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and with overall guidance from the Programme Analyst. The candidate will provide support to initiatives in the field of Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Renewable Energy, as well as Improvement of Solid Waste Management in the Gaza Strip.

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and with overall guidance from the Programme Analyst Manager, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Provide support in coordination of project activities; • Monitoring of project activities and expected results; • Support the drafting of regular updates on the project’s activities and outputs; • Monitor solid waste management and medical waste management related activities; • Support the evaluation of environmental and social impact of ongoing activities; • Supervise, monitor and make recommendations on clean-up, reclamation and waste management activities; • Provide support in developing, testing and implementing technical solutions which will help organizations actively reduce their negative impact on the environment; • Support the implementation of public awareness and advocacy campaigns; • Assist in preparing the required technical documents for the renovation and construction interventions, procuring equipment, and hiring technical consultants; • Liaise with the UNDP projects’ partners and stakeholders for having proper information sharing on the implementation and challenges. •Perform other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisors.

Results/Expected Outputs

• The development of capacity through coaching, mentoring and formal on-the-job training, when working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-) governmental counter-parts, including Implementing Partners (IPs); • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed • Activities on the ground are well implemented in high quality and timely manner. • Payments are issued in a timely manner • Construction activities are finalized as planned. • Effective support to the UNDP project supervisory activities to maintain good control on the site construction activities • The necessary documentation for keeping up project’s files are maintained for auditing and inclusive of all projects related information.

Environment Engineering/Solid Waste Management and Reduction.

A 9 months contract with subsequent contract extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment. Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment. A Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of ILS 4700 is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents), as well as final repatriation (if applicable) and resettlement allowance for satisfactory service. UNV will provide a copy of the UNV Conditions of Service to the successful candidate together with the offer of assignment.
