Duties and Responsibilities

The Environmental Communications Intern will undertake a range of assignments to engage with regional audiences to raise environmental awareness and promote change in policy and practice. This will include the following duties: • Assist in the timely delivery of compelling informational and promotional materials to key stakeholders and the media; • Engage in regular social media outreach and monitor regional platforms; • Contribute to the implementation of global campaign activities and advocacy initiatives in the region, with a focus on the triple planetary crises; • Assist in the planning and coordination of events, meetings, and presentations and key UN International Days, including World Environment Day; • Manage the regional web site as well as the North American intranet presence; • Create graphics and develop assets for online and promotional purposes; • Undertake research for speeches, presentations and articles; • Draft short reports, stories, briefs, correspondence, and other written materials in support of regional priorities; • Support outreach to partners, governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and other relevant stakeholders, including youth; • Attend and report back on relevant meetings, conferences, and other events, as requested; • Update and maintain contact database for stakeholders and partners, including media; • Perform any other communications-related duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage. NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
