Overview

Develop a communication strategy for MEWA's environmental advocacy and outreach.

You have:

  • Master’s in Communication, Public Relations, Environmental Research, Environmental Sciences, or related fields is required.
  • PHD is an asset.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in communication, advocacy and awareness raising is required.
  • Previous practical experience in similar tasks in environmental research, communication, and advocacy is desirable.
  • Knowledge of environment issues in Saudi Arabia is an asset.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Arabic is required.

Duties and Responsibilities Organizational Setting:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The West Asia Office delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives. This consultancy is established at the West Asia Office within the framework of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement between UNEP and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Consultant will report to the Project Manager at UNEP West Asia Office.

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager in UNEP West Asia Office and in coordination with the respective department in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Consultant will carry-out, inter alia, the following duties and responsibilities:

1. Identify key gaps in the general public's knowledge on the environment through surveys and analysis. 2. Technical guidance in the implementation of the national awareness and community engagement plans and initiatives to raise the awareness levels and determine targets. 3. Design communication campaigns and marketing material to improve public awareness and adopt appropriate delivery channels. 4. Design a roadmap for engagement of local universities in the environmental sustainability program including suggested tools and experience exchange platforms. 5. Organize and participate in events, conferences, and workshops to promote general awareness and encourage community engagement. 6. Regularly assess the efficacy of awareness and community engagement campaigns and implement improvements. 7. Develop an operational manual for building and conducting national specialized awareness campaigns and events addressing different target groups. 8. Technical advice to MEWA in celebrating relevant UN days, such as WED, through localizing the global available materials and suggesting local events/functions. 9. Respond to requests for information on awareness issues from external stakeholders.

Expected Outputs and Deliverables:

1. Workplan for the assignment including outlines of different documents. 2. An operational manual for building and conducting national specialized awareness campaigns and events. 3. Plan of supporting the celebration of relevant UN days. 4. Roadmap for engagement of local universities in the environmental sustainability. 5. Promotional materials including videos, photo compilation, fact sheets, brochures, banners, and flyers for MEWA activities. 6. Community engagement campaigns and events conducted by MEWA.

Qualifications/special skills Master’s in Communication, Public Relations, Environmental Research, Environmental Sciences, or related fields is required. PHD is an asset. Minimum of 10 years of experience in communication, advocacy and awareness raising is required. Previous practical experience in similar tasks in environmental research, communication, and advocacy is desirable. Knowledge of environment issues in Saudi Arabia is an asset.

Languages Fluency in written and spoken in both English and Arabic is required.
