Duties and Responsibilities

​The internship opportunity at the ESCAP Subregional Office for East and North-East Asia (SOENEA) located in Incheon, Republic of Korea, spans a minimum duration of three months and up to six months as deemed necessary by the office. ​ ​​This internship is UNPAID and fulltime. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a designated staff member in their assigned office.​ ​​Intern responsibilities will primarily center around research on the status, causes, drivers and impacts of desertification and land degradation in preparation for a background paper for the North-East Asian Subregional Programme for Environmental Cooperation (NEASPEC). The interns will also support other office work as necessary.​ ​​Duties include a range of tasks, including but not limited to: ​Conducing literature review and providing list of references on desertification and land degradation; ​Collecting and organizing data and information required for preparation of background paper on desertification and land degradation; ​Assisting in the implementation of the event/meetings; ​Supporting the drafting, reviewing and proofreading of a background paper on trends in desertification and land degradation in North-East Asia; and ​Providing administrative support.​

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
