  • Academic background in environmental science, political science, social science, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences or in a related field.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Purpose: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UN Environment's Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This internship offer is within the UNEP/Ecosystems Division/Disasters and Conflicts Branch/Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit in Geneva (Switzerland). The Joint Environment Unit is integrated into OCHA's Response Support Branch. The mission of JEU is to mobilize and coordinate a comprehensive response to environmental emergencies to protect lives, livelihoods, ecosystems, and future generations. JEU assists Member States in preparing for and responding to environmental emergencies by coordinating international efforts and mobilizing partners to aid affected countries requesting assistance. By pairing the environmental expertise of UNEP with the humanitarian response network coordinated by OCHA, the JEU ensures an integrated approach in responding to environmental emergencies. The mission of JEU is to mobilize and coordinate a comprehensive response to environmental emergencies to protect lives, livelihoods, ecosystems, and future generations. JEU assists Member States in preparing for and responding to environmental emergencies by coordinating international efforts and mobilizing partners to aid affected countries requesting assistance. By pairing the environmental expertise of UNEP with the humanitarian response network coordinated by OCHA, the JEU ensures an integrated approach in responding to environmental emergencies. The work is carried out in the overall context of the environmental emergency response work of the UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit (JEU). Duties includes, but not limited to: • Supports in the coordination and mobilization of environmental emergency response by reviewing guidelines, procedures and reports; • Assists in environmental emergency readiness work, including the organization of meetings, trainings and workshops with response partners; • Support the development of guidance material for humanitarian and environmental actors for entry points (policies, tools, processes, skills) for environment in humanitarian action; • Assist with the design, preparation and update of JEU advocacy materials; • Assist with the organization of meetings and outreach events, developing necessary background materials, sourcing appropriate speakers, and report writing; • Support communication activities (e.g. draft stories for social media, newsletter, etc); • Depending upon country requests, support the deployment of response and readiness expertise to Member States and humanitarian partners; • Depending on the interns’ skills and background (e.g. specific language skills), country- or region-specific work, and review tasks may be assigned; • Support other activities as requested. Ultimate result of service: Support to the overall objective of the UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit role in promoting environmental sustainability and resilience in humanitarian action, ultimately contributing to the protection of lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems in crisis-affected areas.

Qualifications/special skills

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation from an academic programme. Applicants who are unable to commence the internship within one year of graduation shall not be accepted. Academic background at least at Bachelor’s level or equivalent, in the area of environmental science, political science, social science, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences or in a related field.
