Duties and Responsibilities The consultant will be located in the Engineering Unit of the Facilities Management Section, Central Support Services, Division of Administration, United Nations Office at Geneva.

Under the direct supervision of Engineering Support Supervisor, the incumbent will apply professional engineering knowledge and expertise in the performance of the following duties: 1. Applies commonly used engineering calculations, practices and precedents in completing portions of larger projects related to the design, construction, or repair of buildings technical installation such as HVAC, plumbing, sanitary, Building management systems, electrical high and low voltage, electrical power generation and distribution systems, security systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion detection systems, etc), and other related infrastructures and activities in the building engineering field 2. Plans and designs specifications for projects. Drafts terms of reference and technical evaluation reports. 3. Develops technical data regarding materials, sizes, dimensions, and quantities and costs to be incorporated in formal specifications. 4. Estimates costs of repairs of damaged buildings, facilities and systems to determine feasibility of repairs or replacement. 5. Liaises with other engineers and specialists responsible for related specialized phases to arrive at mutually satisfactory approaches to problems by exchanging and comparing data. 6. Conducts investigations to develop improved designs and construction techniques. 7. Produces cost data and estimates on engineering-related requirements. 8. Analyzes project proposals to ensure technical feasibility and to ensure that project objectives are attainable within prescribed resources. 9. Conducts research on development of new technical systems and follow development to identify improved methods and equipment. 10. Prepares life cycle cost analyses and uses such approach to optimize the total cost of ownership of equipment. 11. Assesses the maintenance requirements based on risk, need of reliability, redundancy, cost and other relevant parameters

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in engineering, architecture or other related field. A first-level university degree in engineering, architecture or other related field in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A specialization in mechanical or electrical engineering (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and buildings management system) would be an asset. Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in engineering, architecture, or related area is required. Experience in the UN common system is desirable. Experience in Facility management is desirable. Experience in project management within a multidisciplinary team is desirable. Experience in renovation and upgrading of existing buildings' facilities (such as power installations, electronic security installations, sanitary installations, energy management, building management system projects) is desirable. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
