Overview

Support WFP in energy and environmental initiatives to achieve food security.

You have:

• Currently enrolled and have attended University courses in the last 12 months including completing at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months in renewable energy, sustainable development, environmental studies, engineering, environmental management, project management, and/or water management or related disciplines.
• Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s degree) from a recognized university, undertaking the programmes mentioned above and have attended classes in the past 12 months.
• Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must; knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French would be an asset.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Prior experience designing and/or implementing sustainability projects highly regarded.
• Excellent written and oral communications skills.
• Ability to extract pertinent information from relevant sources.
• Capacity to conceptualize issues, think in abstract terms and analyze numerical data.
• Good interpersonal skills with ability to work harmoniously with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

The WFP Regional Bureau for Eastern and Central Africa (RBN) is based in Nairobi and provides strategic direction, technical guidance, resource mobilization and management support to WFP operations and activities in ten countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan , Sudan and Uganda.

JOB PURPOSE

The issue of sustainable energy access is managed by the Climate, Resilience and Gender unit and focuses on helping to ensure WFP’s work to achieve food security is not hindered by beneficiaries’ lack of energy access. The Unit looks at how to integrate climate and energy solutions across a range of programmatic areas managed by WFP, including humanitarian relief, emergency preparedness and response, school feeding programmes, food assistance for assets and resilience programmes, smallholder farmer support programmes and nutrition programmes.

WFP strives to be a leader in environmental sustainability within the UN system. In pursuit of this goal, WFP adopted a new Environmental policy in February 2017, which commits the organization to avoiding unintended harm to the environment, its beneficiaries, or any other affected populations as a result of our operations and programmes, and to maximize environmental benefits. The policy contains 3 tools: a set of environmental and social standards, risk screening of activity design, and an environmental management system (EMS) consistent with the international standard ISO 14001.

We are seeking to fill the position of Energy and Environment Intern based in the Programme (Project Cycle Management) Unit of the Regional Bureau, Nairobi.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently enrolled and have attended University courses in the last 12 months inclusive of having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months’ in the following disciplines : renewable energy, sustainable development, environmental studies, engineering, environmental management, project management, and/or water management or related disciplines.
• Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s degree) from a recognized university, undertaking the programmes mentioned above and have attended classes in the past 12 months,
• Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must; knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French would be an asset.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

What you will do:

Working together with the Regional Energy for Food Security Advisor and Regional Environmental and Social Safeguards Advisor, the intern will:

• Support research and analysis for energy and environment related activities. Research support is required for drafting proposals, factsheets, creating presentations, mapping exercises, etc.
• Support in collecting and sharing best practices on energy and environmental aspects from within the region to promote ongoing engagement and improvement.
• Under the guidance of the Energy for Food Security Advisor, support the coordination of the implementation of the pilot project of Electric Pressure Cookers in schools in Kenya.
• Facilitate the planning and organization of Environmental and Social Safeguards (including risk screening) trainings and energy-related webinars, where needed.
• Support in promoting awareness of WFP's environmental and social impacts and of the safeguard’s framework as a tool for systematically managing those impacts.
• Seek opportunities to link WFP safeguards to national safeguard regulations and capacities.

TRAINING AND LEARNING ELEMENTS

The intern will be provided access to a series of e-learning opportunities on energy for food security on WeLearn as well as become knowledgeable on WFP’s Environmental and Social Safeguarding Framework and the training that is given on a programmatic level to Country Offices.

Further, the intern will receive exposure to professionals from several functional areas within WFP with whom the Energy and Environment team collaborates on a daily basis.

The intern will gain practical experience in how to conduct trainings at a large, international organisation as well as how to communicate and support country offices in how to integrate and incorporate energy access activities and environmental considerations in country office programmes. They will also gain experience in drafting technical and non-technical documents for different audiences, as well as preparing for, participating in, and documenting findings of meetings, workshops, and training sessions for a range of stakeholders

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• The internship programme duration is 6 months.
• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP depending on the duty station of assignment.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
• WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
