Role and Responsibilities:

The purpose of the assistant position is to assist in the day to day implementation of the education project. Education assistants will support all field level operations and supervise any future incentive workers.

The following is a brief description of the role:

Generic responsibilities:

  • Strict adherence to the NRC Code of Conduct and Child Safeguarding Policy.
  • Assist with the implementation of the education project according to the plan of action.
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management.
  • Ensure proper filing of documents.
  • Make decisions on the ground with limited or remote supervision.
  • Promote and share ideas for technical improvement.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Assist in the implementation of education activities under direction of the education officer, supervise incentive teachers and outreach workers.
  • Provide support to NRC activities, schools and assessments in line with NRC quality standards.
  • Ensure direct communication and feedback with beneficiaries and relevant host communities.
  • Ensure ongoing monitoring and reporting of projects at field level.
  • Organize, support and participate in community engagement initiatives, outreach out of school children (OOSC) and data collection.
  • Regularly travel to the field to support education, recreation and psychosocial support (PSS) activities.
  • Support teacher trainings as required by the project objectives.
  • Organize and implement distributions of teaching and learning materials.
  • Any other task relevant to the position as requested by line manager.

    Critical interfaces:

    By interfaces, NRC means processes and projects that are interlinked with other departments/units or persons. Relevant interfaces for this position are:

  • Education programme development manager (PDM), education project coordinator (PC), education team leader (TL) and education project officer (PO).

  • Other education and Shelter/WASH staff supporting integrated approach.
  • Logistics staff supporting programs.

    Scale and scope of position :

Staff: None; shared supervision of any future incentive staff

Stakeholders: Camp management authorities, other NGOs, community groups, local education authorities

Budgets: No budgetary responsibilities

Information: Responsible for weekly site visit reports and indicator tracking

Legal or compliance: Responsible for reporting any code of conduct violation or child protection concern to line manager immediately.

Generic professional competencies for this position:

  • Experience working in a humanitarian/recovery context.
  • Previous experience working in complex and volatile contexts; ability to remain calm and professional in tense situations.
  • Documented results related to previous responsibilities.
  • Solid computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Proven ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work diligently both independently and in a team.

    Setting Context related skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Written and spoken fluency in Arabic; proficiency in English.

  • Knowledge of education context in Benghazi; understanding of the circumstances, needs and challenges IDP/returnee and refugee children face and the sensitivity of the context
  • Understanding of Sphere or INEE minimum standards is a plus
  • Knowledge of the basics of gender, child protection and PSS
  • Experience working with children or teaching
  • Experience in community mobilization and/or relationship building
  • Candidates with a university and/or advanced degree preferred.
