The purpose of the Education Coordinator – Accelerated Education (AE) Interagency Coordination, is to provide leadership to support inter-agency efforts to develop a harmonised approach to Accelerated Education (AE) in Kenya. According to the UNHCR Summary Progress Report for the Implementation of the Education Plan for 2021, there were 205,626 school going children between the ages 3-17 in the refugee camps in the first quarter of 2021. Out of these, 144,973 were learners enrolled in school in Term 2. During the period of reporting, the number of out of school children was estimated at 123,863 while over age learners stood at 63,210. The net enrolment was quite low estimated at 40%. There are also large unknown numbers of youth in communities who want to learn but who cannot enrol or for whom the formal education system is not a good fit. There are also a number of actors providing AE opportunities in the camps. While the programmes have been entitled differently and, in some cases, the target group and relationship to the national system has varied, the overall aim has been similar in delivering condensed content within a shorter period in a safe space for over-age and out of school children and youth.
