UNICEF Viet Nam is working to expand and deepen its partnerships in this context, in order to leverage progress for children, adolescents, and women. The International UN Volunteer Education Officer (Climate Change & Environment) will be expected to play a key role in facilitating strategic discussion and to strengthen the partnership between UNICEF in Viet Nam and key public and private sector resource and program partners, including those in the Republic of Korea.

Each component of UNICEF’s work presents opportunities to act on climate, energy, and/or environmental issues in order to deliver more sustainable results, inherent is to apply both equity and gender equality lenses. Promoting cross-sectoral programming is therefore essential.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Education, the International UN Volunteer Education Officer (Climate Change & Environment) will undertake the following tasks:

Identify and support evidence generation activities and research to enhance understanding on how climate change and environmental degradation are affecting children in Viet Nam and inform advocacy and child-friendly policy and legislation to mitigate climate, and environmental risks on children’s learning, development and wellbeing.

Contribute to identifying new strategic programming opportunities and partnerships in the area of low emission climate-resilient development.

Support the development of strategic UNICEF policy position papers and internal briefing notes on climate change and environmental issues.

Enhance climate change mainstreaming in UNICEF Vietnam Country Office’ portfolio & programming.

Support the experimentation of innovative climate solutions in schools and undertake regular on-the-sight monitoring of the progresses made.

Provide day-to-day oversight of climate change, environmental issues and climate-smart school portfolio of the section.

Preparation of funding proposals and briefing documents for donors to mobilize investments for climate-smart schools in Viet Nam.

Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Location of the workplace: The incumbent will be based in Ha Noi that offers adequate living standard. Ha Noi is classified as “A” duty station as of 1 January 2014 under the mobility and hardship (M&H) classification of duty stations, as determined by the international Civil Service Commission (ICSC). The Green One UN House is 4 km from Ha Noi old quarter, about 20 minutes by car for each trip. Public bus and taxi are available. Traffic jams occur during rush hours.

Housing: There are a number of hotels/service apartments in Ha Noi that the International UN Volunteer can consider staying upon arrival and prior to finding long-term accommodation. The International UN Volunteer Education Officer (Climate Change & Environment) should liaise with UNICEF once travel dates are confirmed. UNICEF can provide a list of hotels close to UNICEF office. Many international staff live in the Tay Ho (West Lake) area. It is up to the International UN Volunteer Education Officer (Climate Change & Environment) to decide which area they prefer. A security survey by UNDSS is carried out prior to occupying the house/apartment. Both independent houses and apartments are available.

Furnished houses, apartments and rooms can be found. It is not necessary to bring furniture since it is easily available and are of good quality and reasonable prices. UNICEF can provide the contact details of real estate agents.

Cost of Living: An average rent for a 3-4 bedroom house/apartment will be between USD$ 1200-2500/month, and a studio/one-room apartment will be between USD$ 600 - 1000. Furnished houses and apartments can be found. It is not necessary to bring furniture since it is easily available and are of good quality and reasonable prices.
