Job Description

Job Summary

The Resettlement & Placement program at the IRC in Phoenix provides educational services to new arrival adult clients to enhance integration. These individuals, mainly refugees and asylees, are immigrants who are survivors of war, persecution, and civil conflict. They have diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Moreover, they are highly adaptable and eager to start rebuilding their lives in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Education Assistant works within IRC providing a range of supportive services to meet clients’ educational needs. This position is primarily responsible for providing necessary educational workshops, including cultural orientation, job readiness training, as well as transit training instruction. The position will also connect adult clients to external English language educational services as needed. Additionally, the Education Assistant will outreach to community resources and providers to connect clients and enrich the classroom learning experience.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

· Provide training to IRC clients from a facilitator’s guide and implement hands-on activities to enhance the experience and learning for the client.

· Provide workshop instruction using adult learning methods and active engagement principles.

· Coordinate with IRC staff to schedule new clients for trainings, including making room reservations and scheduling interpreters.

· Provide in-depth public transit training by riding with clients on Valley Metro buses and educating clients how to effectively use public transit.

· Connect clients to external services through referral systems.

· Track and record attendance, referrals, progress, and other such data points utilizing Microsoft products, digital platforms, and physical filing systems to ensure outcomes are achieved and reported appropriately.

· Administer assessments and examine results to process changes in order to improve student learning.

· Incorporate computer-based both remote and in-person learning into the orientation process.

· Participate in all program meetings, staff development activities, and actively engage as a team member.

· Comply with all policies, procedures and protocols of the agency.

· Communicate regularly with the CO Coordinator through team meetings to coordinate the provision of adjustment training services.

· Other related duties as assigned.

Internal: Resettlement Caseworkers and Assistants; Employment Assistants; Integrative Services Caseworkers and Assistants

External: Community Partners such as Valley Metro; City of Phoenix Police Department; Adult Education Partners through community colleges and universities; GED programs; Volunteer Assistance Organizations; Ethnic Community Based Organizations; Friendly House; English Language Training Programs

Job Requirements

· Undergraduate degree in a related field such as English; Education; Teaching preferred.

· At least one year working with adult learners required.

· Previous experience working with refugees or other diverse populations preferred.

· Preferably teaching experience with students who have English as a second language.

· Fluency in written and spoken English, bilingual ability preferred in Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Arabic, Dari/ Farsi, Pashto, French or other refugee/immigrant language used in Arizona.

· Cross-cultural understanding and strong communication skills, both written and verbal with lived experience as refugee or immigrant or in lieu of lived experience, experience working with refugees and/or immigrants or experience working cross-culturally.

· Ability to prepare accurate and timely case notes, reports, and assessments for timely documentation and organization client interactions and services provided, maintained, and updated in the case files.

· Computer proficiency with an emphasis on Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook). Experience in web-based data entry systems and databases strongly preferred.

· Highly organized self-starter with success prioritizing multiple tasks, making critical decisions, and delivering results in a fast-paced environment with stringent deadlines.

· Able to work through a variety of mediums in presenting and teaching effectively.

· Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a multi-cultural environment.

· Must possess or be eligible to receive a fingerprint clearance card.

· Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area for remote, home or field based teaching.

Working Environment:

This position is based out of Phoenix, AZ.

Travel for the provision of resettlement services can range up to a 100-mile radius.

Work hours may vary outside of traditional work hours (early morning, evenings and weekend)

May also need to provide transportation for clients in personal vehicle or in a 15-passenger van
