The Organisation

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.

We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected.

Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.

We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. And we enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.

We have been building powerful partnerships for children for over 85 years, and are now active in more than 80 countries.

THE OPPORTUNITY

According to Plan International’s Child, Early and Forced Marriage study in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) areas, girls in poor households are often forced to engage in child early and forced marriage as a family’s temporary way out of poverty. The study concluded that dowries from these are perceived as a temporary relief from the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19.

The Learn and Stay Protected Project was designed to lessen the impact of economic and inequality challenges brought by COVID-19 on the education, protection, and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) needs of married and at-risk girls and young women, so they can participate in rights-claiming and talk about issues where they feel disempowered, in safe spaces, and with the protection of their families and communities.
