Result of Service The Editor and Writer consultant will provide editing services for English and, if possible, also Spanish.

Responsibilities The Editor and Writer consultant will cover internal communications including particularly country and thematic briefs, documents related to the Forum of Ministers of Environment´s intergovernmental process (agenda, minutes, reports, presentations) and communication, advocacy and knowledge products such as brochures, factsheets, articles, reports, newsletters, publications, feature stories, thematic briefs, policy briefs etc. - Draft and finalize briefs (country, thematic and political) - Conduct editing of the English, and if possible, Spanish, language content of various materials, as per UNEP LAC Office needs. The editing should ensure the correct use of gender sensitive language and terminology, internal consistency in language use across UNEP publications and externally with the accepted international terminology, both intellectual and stylistic, general readability and accessibility to the general public and a broad readership. - Undertake the editing of translated texts (primarily Spanish to English and if possible English to Spanish), and make necessary revisions to ensure high quality translation in line with the above standards and criteria. - Make editorial suggestions for materials such as brochures, newsletter, and booklets, etc. - Edit and revise texts for the website, if needed. - Support the UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office team in developing catchy titles, slogans and reader-friendly language that would make the documents more marketable. - Conduct final quality control to ensure accurate, reader-friendly and high-quality text. - Work in close collaboration with UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office staff to ensure full compliance with the projects’ priorities and finalization of the documents on time. The above tasks are indicative and subject to further detailing through specific service requests to be made during the course of the contract duration. The Editor and Writer consultant demonstrates a client-oriented approach, tact and ability to work with people of different national, cultural and ethnical backgrounds. The Editor ensures effective and efficient provision of services, full confidentiality in all aspects of assignment, management of information flow and follow-up on deadlines and commitments made. All work submitted should be aligned with UN Women’s established standards and formats and should be cleared by UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office. The Editor will be required to have her/his own technical and software-based equipment to deliver the services specified in this ToR.

The Consultant shall report to the UNEP Regional Director and Representative for the Latin America and the Caribbean Office and work in close collaboration with the Deputy Regional Director and the reporting assistant

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office, located in Panama City, works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States - with a population of about 588 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly of UN Environment (UNEA).

As part of its work, UNEP LAC Office is carrying out variety of targeted communications, visibility, publicity, knowledge sharing and advocacy interventions that aim to advance the implementation of its goals. In this respect, the Office is producing different types of communications, advocacy, knowledge and visibility materials and publications: brochures, reports, infographics, briefs, manuals, policy papers, etc. In some cases, the Office is translating into English various materials that are originally in Spanish and relevant to its programming. In view of responding to the English and Spanish language editing needs of the office for the above-mentioned purposes, UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office seeks to hire an Editor responsible for providing timely and qualitative editing services.

The incumbent for this post will report to the UNEP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean Office. The consultant will be home based and will have an estimated regular dedication of 40 hours per week.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Master’s degree in one or more of the following disciplines: English language and literature, journalism, public relations, communications, political science, development or other relevant fields. Experience: - At least 5 years of experience as a development related professional including record of writing reports, materials, publications and/or analysis to communicate complex programmatic information in reader-friendly formats and style; - At least 3 years of experience with the UN system will be an asset - Excellent writing and editing skills and demonstrated record of producing high-quality written work. - 2 years of experience in editing texts, reports, or etc. about environment, gender, sustainable development, or politics is an asset - Previous working experience with UN entities, civil society organizations or other international organizations on communications materials and reports is desirable. Language: For the post fluency in English is required and working knowledge of Spanish is an asset
