This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Description of task

The work of the UNV will be done remotely, as there is no need for on-site engagement. The focus of the assignment will be in two parts:

  1. Editing of the CCA document to ensure it meets UN editing standards, as well as to develop a series of outreach products highlighting the content of the CCA in a manner that will promote better understanding and awareness of the identified needs and trends, as well as the intended trajectory for the UNSDCF programming. (April 2021)
  2. Supporting the UN Communications Group in the drafting of the UN Communications Strategy of the UNSDCF(September 2021)

The UNV Communication Advisor will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Edit the CCA

In support of the Resident Coordinator’ Office (RCO), the incumbent will:

  • Edit the CCA document, in accordance with both UN editorial guidelines and the UNDCO guidelines for the CCA document itself.
  • Ensure that the document has relevant graphics to help the reader/user find the key data and findings,
  • Develop public information products for the RCO that will be used on social media, during consultations with stakeholders, and support the overall user-friendliness of the CCA.
  • In consultation with the RCO Communications Officer, draft Tweets, hashtags and Facebook posts based on the CCA.
  1. Support the development of the UNSDCF Communications Strategy
  • Develop the One UN communication plan for the promotion of the UNSDCF in close consultation with RCO Communications Officer and the UN Communications Working Group (UNCG)

  • Identify tools to increase coverage and understanding of the One UN’s work in the country – e.g. factsheets, stories from the field, best practices that inform and engage the general public.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Educational additional comments

  • Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Communications, Media, Journalism, Literature, Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities, Political Science or related field; or a Bachelor’s degree in the above fields with additional years of experience (7 instead of 5 years).

Experience remark

  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in related areas in multiple countries; of which 2 years of experience in professional editing, as well as designing, implementing, supporting and advising in public outreach and communication strategies is required.
  • Experience in the usage of media technology, social media for public information, and good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems is required.
  • Professional experience in external relations and/or as a journalist.
  • Experience at the national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy would be desirable but not a requirement;
  • Knowledge of development and humanitarian processes and the interests of stakeholders in supporting the process (including media and CSO sectors) would be desirable
  • Experience working in Afghanistan is desirable or a demonstrable knowledge/understanding of the current political context;
  • Leadership qualities, including the ability to motivate others, involve all members of a team, inspire a sense of ownership and responsibility among staff, and elicit consistently high-quality output;
  • Ability to meet challenges, constructively and creatively;
  • Time management and organizational skills, with the ability to undertake multiple tasks.
