OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Editorial Services Unit, or EDT, is part of the Office of the Director, Programme Management. EDT ensures that all official documents and communications issued by the Regional Director and the Regional Office are in clear and appropriate standard English. EDT is also the central coordinating unit for all official Regional Committee documentation. In addition, EDT handles quality control of mission reports, meeting reports, and other documents and information products in the Region.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the general supervision of the Senior Editor the incumbent performs the following functions:

(1) Edits correspondence, reports, information products, and other documents for language, consistency, clarity, organization, and WHO style, as per the Senior Editor's instructions; (2) Communicates with authoring units regarding recommendations and changes, provides guidance on English language documents, including memos, form letters, and corrrespondences; (3) Provides assessments of the degree of editing required to produce documents consistent with WHO standards, especially as guidance for authors in contracting competent editors at appropriate rates; (4) Monitors the submission and distribution of documents, minimizing delay and inconvenience with constructive engagement while practicing strict version control with precise, real-time records of all amendments and changes made by contributors; and (5) Acts for the Senior Editor during his/her absence, and perform other related functions and duties, as assigned or directed by the Senior Editor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree in communications, development, public health/policy from a recognized university/institution or equivalent professional experience. Desirable: Master's degree in Communications-related field an advantage.

Experience

Essential: Five years of experience writing and editing communication and information products, preferably in the public/development sector with demonstrated editorial project management skills. Knowledge and experience in writing and editing on public health/development sector issues with experience working in developing countries. Experience in ''re-write", especially clarifying texts written by non-native English speakers. Desirable: Experiences in writing and editing documents for the WHO, United Nations or other multilateral development organizations.

Skills

Excellent editing and "re-write" skills. Excellent listening and editorial support skills. Familiarity with public health/development issues. Familiarity with WHO/public health terminology and the WHO style guidance. Excellent communications skills, both written and oral. Strong customer service abilities. Courtesy, tact, and ability to work harmoniously as a member of a team, adapat to diverse cultural and educational backgrounds and maintain a high standard of personal conduct. Ability to build and maintain external partner relationships. Ability to multitask successfully under pressure.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 62,692 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2518 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
