Result of Service The consultant will deliver the edited versions, ensure consistency of language in line with UN Guidelines, review and standardise all data tables, references and create table of contents when needed of a range of publications produced by the Energy and Climate Branch.

The consultant will deliver high quality publications on the topics of food, cities, energy and climate. , which are coherent, clear, easy to understand and precise from a language perspective.

Work Location Homebased

Expected duration 12 months on a part-time basis.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP's Energy & Climate Branch is looking for an editor who is familiar with the United Nations Editorial Manual which remains the standard style guide for UN publications.

The consultant will work with UNEP’s Energy and Climate Branch Communications Officer in close collaboration with the Energy & Climate Programme Officers and carry out the editing of publications (technical reports, global status reports, think pieces, white papers, policy briefs), including standardising language, ensuring consistency in terminology and standardisation of data tables and references.

Specifically, the consultant will: - correct spelling and formatting, rectifying any typographical errors in text - ensure the text is well written and in the right style for the intended audience - ensure correct grammar and spelling and appropriate use of words - check facts and ensure error-free texts, and raise any related queries with the teams responsible for the development of the reports - check repetition - shorten where necessary - when needed, ensure that all references and sources are accurately and consistently stipulated - check that tables and graphs are correct - ensure that footnotes are consistently numbered - check consistency of names, titles - carry out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors in close collaboration with the team responsible for the development of the technical reports - ensure that final text complies with the United Nations Editorial Manual which remains the standard style guide for UN publications

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: A university degree in journalism, communication, social sciences, environmental management, sustainability issues or other related field. Experience: At least 10 years of experience of text editing reports and documents. Documented experience on knowledge of energy and climate terminology is a must. Experience on broader sustainable development issues is welcome. Ideally, the consultant will also have experience in ensuring language consistency across text and data tables and proofing references. Familiarity with the United Nations Editorial Manual is mandatory. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required.
