You have:

• An advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in biology or medicine is required.
• A first-level university degree, combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
• A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in studies on bats and public health issues are required.
• Experience in writing and editing academic manuscripts is required.
• Expertise in projects related to the problem of bats and rabies is required.
• Experience in preparing layouts of scientific publications is required.
• Previous educational publications on bats and public health issue.
• Fluency in English is required, knowledge of other UN languages is desirable.

Result of Service

The text of the leaflet "Rabies in European bats. Information for professionals, volunteers and stakeholders" is updated in 2026 and available translations are corrected accordingly. The amended English text must be submitted to the EUROBATS Secretariat.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a global intergovernmental treaty aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of migratory species and their habitats. Numerous additional intergovernmental instruments on migratory species conservation have been adopted under the broad umbrella of CMS which are supported by the CMS Secretariat. In addition, two regional agreements on migratory species adopted under CMS have their own Secretariats which are co-located with the CMS Secretariat in Bonn - the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and the Agreement on the Conservation of European Populations of Bats (EUROBATS). EUROBATS is a binding international treaty which was concluded in 1991. It currently has 38 Parties, and its species span a total of 63 range states in Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. EUROBATS aims to protect all 55 species of bats identified in the Agreement Area, through legislation, education, conservation measures and international co-operation among member states as well as countries that have not yet joined. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. In the present context, UNEP provides the administrative functions for the CMS, AEWA and EUROBATS Secretariats. The contractor shall carry out an academic review of the manuscript “Rabies in European bats. Information for professionals, volunteers and stakeholders” (2024) and update it in line with newly published scientific literature. The contractor shall also liaise with the translators of the French, German, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Ukrainian and other available language versions to ensure that all translations are updated following the 2026 revision. The contractor should report to the Programme Officer at the EUROBATS Secretariat whenever the work is complete, but not later then 15.04.2026
