Work for the IMF. Work for the World.

The Statistics Department (STA) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) provides global leadership on macroeconomic statistical methodologies and standards for the IMF, its member countries, and the international statistical community at large. It supports IMF surveillance and lending operations by strengthening member countries’ capabilities to produce and disseminate macroeconomic and financial statistics for sound policy-making. STA collaborates with other IMF departments, donors, and other external partners to ensure that data needs for bilateral and multilateral surveillance and lending operations are met. STA has launched a program to develop and disseminate climate change and related environmental statistics for IMF and external stakeholders’ use in monitoring the inter-relationship between climate change, economic growth and financial stability. A key component of this program is the IMF’s Climate Change Indicators Dashboard (CID).

STA has an opening for an Economist/Senior Economist in its Real Sector Division (STARE) that will contribute to the implementation of its emerging climate change statistics work program and its integration into macroeconomic and financial statistical frameworks. To support the implementation of the division’s overall work program, the selected candidate is also expected to undertake methodological and capacity development (CD) work in national accounts statistics.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

  • Contribute to the development of a framework that integrates economic, financial and climate related statistics to better inform climate related economic policies. Areas of work include the development of (i) economic activity indicators, such as air emissions indicators, mitigation and adaption expenditures, and renewable energy indicators; and (ii) physical risk indicators.
  • Contribute to the development, regular updates, and further improvement of the CID indicators; and support STARE’s work on the new G20 Data Gaps Initiative, focusing on the proposed recommendations on climate change.
  • Contribute to the implementation of STARE’s CD program, including training and technical assistance with a focus on climate change-related issues.
  • Support other Fund departments in multilateral and bilateral surveillance through methodological advice, data and analytical work, with a focus on climate change.
  • Collaborate with other international organizations, specifically on climate change-related statistical issues such as methodologies, data standards, and taxonomies.
  • Pursue research and analytical work on climate change related issues, in support of furthering STA’s objectives, including showcasing STA databases and/or using them for evidence-based policymaking.
  • Contribute to methodological and CD work in national accounts statistics, including in areas emerging as part of the update of the System of National Accounts (SNA).
