You have:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme or final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) or have graduated with a university degree.
- Be computer literate in standard software applications.
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to UN ideals.
- Have a demonstrated ability to interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
- Fluency in English and knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities
Background: The internship is located withing External Relations and Outreach (ERC) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA). Under the direct supervision of the Secretary of the commission and Chief of External Relations and outreach, the intern will be responsible for carrying out the following functions: 1 - Conducting research and reference searches on issues relating to economic development, social development and general areas of work 2 - Compiling, processing and working with socioeconomic databases derived from a variety of sources 3 - Supporting the draft of inputs to presentations, project documents and research papers, as well as the organization of meetings 4 - Surveying and preparing reports on the economic and social policy environment in the region 5 - Assist in other ad-hoc activities as instructed
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (Second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above); 2. Applicants must: (a) be computer literate in standard software applications. (b) have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and (c) have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differeing opinions and vies. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
