Growth has been uneven across and within countries, institutions still need strengthening, and the Region has a big role to play on global public goods. The COVID pandemic dealt EAP a setback, and as a result poverty is expected to rise for the first time in over 4 decades! A large portion of our region’s population remains vulnerable to income shocks, including from a global economic slowdown, changing global and regional value-chains, and climate-related risks.

The EAP Poverty & Equity Unit

We are seeking to recruit a highly qualified candidate for the EAP Poverty & Equity Team. We generate knowledge and dialogue and support operational solutions, focusing on four thematic lines:

• Data for policy analysis; • Markets and institutions for poverty reduction and shared prosperity; • Fiscal and social policy for poverty reduction and shared prosperity; and • Welfare implications of climate change, fragility and conflict risks.

Our unit covers work across all Country Management Units (CMUs) within the Region, with country work spanning from the smallest Pacific Islands to China; and from fragile and low income countries, to upper middle income countries in the Region! This ETC Analyst position will provide operational support in the World Bank’s CMU covering four countries (Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand), with a primary focus on the Malaysia program.

Job Duties and Accountabilities:

1. Quantitative empirical analysis, drawing on survey, census, and administrative data 2. Preparation of data dissemination products, including maps, data portal and inputs to reports 3. Preparation of written inputs to analytical pieces on poverty, equity and shared prosperity, including background papers, and reports 4. Collaboration with other Global Practices, particularly on aspects of enhancing monitoring and pro-poor distributional impacts 5. Contributions to the overall micro-monitoring effort and any poverty-related policy and programmatic interactions with internal and external clients

We are looking for an imaginative and innovative research analyst with strong quantitative skills, highly capable to support and undertake analysis in the highlighted areas of focus in Malaysia. We appreciate effectiveness in working collaboratively with teams.

Selection Criteria

1. Masters degree in Economics or related subjects with a strong quantitative background and at least two years of relevant work experience (e.g., econometrics, statistics, public policy). 2. Experience working with economic and survey data and analytical tools and models to conduct applied quantitative analyses and produce user-friendly written outputs. 3. Excellent knowledge of STATA and other econometric packages and has the ability to program independently. 4. Familiarity with geospatial analytical tools a plus. 5. Collaborates across boundaries, gives own perspective and willingly receives diverse perspectives. 6. Excellent writing and communication skills. 7. Professional fluency in English and Malay. A good command of Mandarin Chinese is an advantage. 8. Good knowledge of Malaysian government institutions. 9. The ability to work independently and in teams under tight deadlines.
