Description

Do you want to build a career that is truly worthwhile? Working at the World Bank Group provides a unique opportunity for you to help our clients solve their greatest development challenges. The World Bank Group is one of the largest sources of funding and knowledge for developing countries; a unique global partnership of five institutions dedicated to ending extreme poverty, increasing shared prosperity and promoting sustainable development. With 189 member countries and more than 120 offices worldwide, we work with public and private sector partners, investing in groundbreaking projects and using data, research, and technology to develop solutions to the most urgent global challenges. For more information, visit www.worldbank.org

The Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC) is the World Bank’s central reservoir of fresh insights into the most pressing challenges of development. It is led by the Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank Group, who advises the President and senior managers, serves as the community leader for the WBG’s economists, and helps to keep the institution in the forefront of thinking about development policy. DEC constitutes one of the world’s largest teams of economists focused on policy solutions for developing economies. It has six departments: data, indicators, impact evaluation, development research, economic prospects, and development policy.

DEC produces and disseminates key World Bank Group corporate flagship reports. The World Development Report is the Bank’s premier knowledge product. Global Economic Prospects is the leading economic update for emerging markets and developing economies. DEC also leads the Bank’s efforts to benchmark the business environment of economies across the global, through the Business Ready initiative. In addition, DEC is the main repository of the Bank’s open-use data, including the World Development Indicators. DEC is ranked among the top research institutions in the field of development economics.

Responsibilities

As the primary hub of the World Bank's knowledge function, DEC serves member countries and the Bank in generating knowledge and absorbing, disseminating, and utilizing it for economic development and poverty reduction around the world. DEC seeks to increase understanding of development policies and programs by providing intellectual leadership and analytical services to the Bank and the development community.

DEC is expanding its knowledge and outreach activities to meet the needs of the World Bank’s client countries and the world development community while also helping to improve the effectiveness of Bank operations. Creating knowledge involves research, data, analysis, global monitoring and projections, statistical capacity-building, policy review and advice, and communications.

Duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

•Oversee key outreach-related projects as directed by the Office of the Chief Economist, ensuring effective follow-up and reporting, meeting established milestones, and successful implementation.

•Develop snappy, multimedia-intensive, easily shareable content for internal and external stakeholders in support of DEC’s flagship efforts—including the new Data Bank initiative, the ABCDE conference, and key thought leadership products.

•Assist the Office of the Chief Economist on key initiatives related to the Knowledge Compact for Action—including DEC events that introduce ideas on cutting-edge research, challenge current thinking, and reexamine development theories and practices.

•Prepare speeches, talking points, op-eds, and other written products to advance a compelling and integrated narrative regarding the World Bank’s efforts to transform ideas into development impact.

•Offer advice, analysis, and recommendations as required by DEC on staff media training and other outreach-related issues.
